Cheaper Fuel in the UK!!!

Saw this when the latest copy of EVO turned up today...

In a classic case of 'power to the people', fuel price campaigner and ex-Caterham race Ben Scammell has set up a discount fuel scheme called the Pipeline Card that could save you between 5p to 10p per litre. Scammell has discovered that major fuel retailers can supply fuel at a discounted price to any organisation with a sufficiently large membership.
The Pipeline Card already has an agreement in principle with a well-known (but un-named) fuel retailer, but the scheme requires a membership 'in the high tens of thousands' before it can go live. The card and registration are free, so it would seem churlish not to check it out at www.pipelinecard.org "

With the goverment taking as much of my hard earned as possible I was quick to register, I hope the scheme gets off the ground, so I ask all of you to do your bit too!

I have to say I'm cynical. There really isn't a lot of detail on the website. I'd be surprised if it takes off. Mind you, remind me of these words in six months time when I can't join!

Only fear I have is it is some unknown franchise that is used in the back of beyond.

No reason it shouldnt take off - it's just a revisited version of fuel bunkering which we have been using for many years in the road transport field.

Seeing as the little fish have virtually no bargaining power with the Multinational Oil Companies they are nearly always between 5 to 10 pence per litre more expensive.

If I go to the Tesco Super Store and spend £50.00 on groceries I get an additional 5 pence per litre off. So where is the difference over this scheme.

I do agree that the one HUGEproblem we have with fuel pricing is that successive governments see the motorists as cash cows to finance other areas of the economy. Personally I would not begrudge paying £1.00 per litre so long as all the revenue was spent on the roads rather than supporting single mothers on sink estates and they stopped Road Fund Tax.

The obvious solution would be to lower tax on fuel, however we all know that isn't going to happen. It could: with the road tax, fuel tax, road "safety" tax, income tax, council tax, tobacco tax etc we should have the best roads, schools, hospitals & public transport in the world, but it's just spent poorly. As the tax on fuel is a percentage the best way to lower your costs is to pay less.
I personally don't shop in the big supermarkets as they're too expensive, and I'm against having to spend x amount in order to save on some fuel. If the fuel card gets going it will save me money every time I go to the pump, and I can keep shopping at Aldis where I fill my trolley to the brim for under £50 (plus the meats & cheeses are very continental!).

Odd, everywhere I've lived the big supermarkets were always the cheapest place to buy groceries. (the only alternative is usually the corner shop which is 25% more expensive.)

Much as I'd love to move back to Shropshire I fear we're getting a tad off topic. Supermarket prices in Australia may have a little to do with UK fuel prices but not much.

This was when I lived in UK! And Tesco fuel was usually cheaper (he says in a vain attempt to justify the thread direction)

The big supermarkets ARE cheaper than the corner shops, but shops like Aldis, Netto & Lidl are cheaper than the big ones, probably because they don't spend millions on advertising & giving their stores makeovers every couple years. Problem is, Aldis don't have petrol forecourts, & I'm not one to spend £50 in a more expensive store just to save 5p a litre on their own fuel.
The whole point of the fuelcard in question is that you don't have to spend money to save money, you just get the discount every time you fill up. BTW, I am fortunate enough to spend at least a month each year in Australia, and if UK fuel prices were the same as they were down under the last thread I'd be inclined to look at was one about cheaper fuel!!
