Damo74 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Ian Love

Does anyone remember this dude. I have been following the V8's for 30 years but cannot even recall this guy, but one of my mate's assures me he raced in the championship.

Also, does my memory fail me or did the AFL'S Sam Newman once race in the V*'s at the grand prix support race?

If true, any photo's would be appreciated.

Ian Love is someone that was big yet small in western australia.

The guy had money (owns Cocco's) and also had a lot of talent. He could beat the best we had over here. He once got John Bowe over for the 300 and had some mad events in those days.

Sadly he pulled out of racing and that has been our loss.

Gone are the days of big end big money local racing.

Ian Love bought one of Dick Johnson's Mustang's at the end of 1986, and raced it in the 1987 ATCC round at Wanneroo, still in lime green.

Sam Newman did race at VS Commodore at the 1999 AGP Support races, in a 'hot wheels' livery, wearing #99. He was at the back (as even he expected ) all weekend.

Sam could still be out there at Albert Park- they had packed up after the event before he finished- he was that far behind!

Your right there from memory.

WA had a good collection of V8 touring cars/competitors in the mid-90s. Love, Alf Barbagallo, Claude Giorgi, Shaun Walker, Allan McCarthy, Grant Johnson....

Yeah you're spot on Peck, at 10:09am 29th September 1994 Don Watson was killed at Bathurst and Ian Love was to be his co-driver in the 1000

I could be wrong, but I recall his father owning CoCo's (Restaurant in South Perth foreshore) and told Ian to cut back his racing as it became to expensive.

I still graphically remember the pictures that accompanied the story in the next day's Dominion Post over here in my high school library. How the journalist/photographer ever got his camera into that car, I will never know....but it was my first "close" experience of a fatal car crash.

Don seemed like a nice bloke, taken all too prematurely.....much like everyone in motorsport sadly

It was my first fatal motorsport crash I attended and unfortunately not my last

Seeing the Don Watson transport trucks on the road occasionally brings back memories but it also reminds me that his family was able to pick up the pieces and keep the company he started on the road (pun intended) .
