I've thought of that, but I have no way to make sure. Total lack of experience here.
Also I've suspected the rear shocks. After all, the car had been stored for five years. But the owner (I'm only the co-driver) said the car behaved more or less behaving as expected, given the poor tyres. He wasn't kidding, I think.
Still, I hope we can improve the handling a little. I felt I was losing a lot time waiting for the car to regain some composure. Of course, all that could change with decent tyres (and more track time in the car). A private race track for testing would come in very handy now...

The Dunlops will be a lot better than road tyres
Thank you, I wanted to hear that!

There is a school of thought that says 5-50 L 13s all round is the best tyre to use
Can't we just ignore that school?
I see what you mean though, after finding this neat little table here: http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/racing.php

Would it be wise to replace the shocks anyway? And if so, is there a particular type that is a must?

TB, the profile mentioned was a reference, road car tyres are not racing tyres, and I can't afford Dunlops on the road car . . .
I thought that even your bed was on Dunlop's Zef

Changing worn shocks, or getting them rebuilt, is a must. Try Koni or Leda (if still available).
