Alfa Romeo 156: Winner in Italian Superturismo - Loser in STW
Following the topic about difference between Peugeot 406 STW and BTCC
i'd like to propose you this new topic asking why alfa romeo dominate Italian superturimo with Piedone Giovanardi but has not able to win neither a race in STW with Modena but also with same Giovanardi or Larini when they partecipated. |

Alfa Romeo simply didn't put as much effort into STW like they did in the DTM. Probably because they considered the German market to be "conquered", thanks to their success in DTM.

Probably had to more to do with pitching their cars against BMW, Audi and VW than anythign else, espeiclaly the 156.
Sadly the road cars never lived up to the hype. I do recall the 156 being awesome in a straight line, perhaps the best. |

so what is the meaning to partecipate in STW?? it was better dont partecipate and let good memory in german supporter with winning of DTM rather than be at bottom of grid in every race they did.

If I recall correctly, Alfa Corse only ran selected STW races. Norisring in '98 and '99 come to mind, as well as the race at Misano in '99. The other Alfas were just run by privateers, like Franz Engstler for example. Maybe it was enough for Alfa to have "just" some 155s/156s running around in Germany, just to keep the brand in the German racing scene, without spending too many ressources there. After all, the later DTM/ITC years cost a lot of money for Alfa.

Ah yes, I remember Modena and Danner racing in STW in 1997. However, it wasn't run by Alfa Corse, but by Schübel, if I recall correctly. Feel free, to correct me, though .

Euroteam barely got support from Alfa Romeo while entering and developing the 156 in 1998 & 99, they also did not get the same material as Alfa Corse did. i don't understand why as the German championship was a lot more competitive as the Italian Championship.
i remember when STW raced at Misano in 1999, instead of working together Alfa Corse saw Euroteam more as a opponent then as a team that used the same car. i remember the audi or opel teams worked together. Last edited by Metzo; 25 Oct 2014 at 22:47. |

I think you mean 1998, but you'll find the reasons here: http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...omeo+btcc+1998
