Maguire Metro

Took a bit of finding but as promised.
Auto Performance was one of the better Clubman magazines of the era.

I'm sure that you can all guess why I'm posting on here, now, but if you had not seen already in the threads on Special Saloons & Modsports etc the CSCC is organising a reviaval race for such cars at its August Bank Holiday Monday meeting this year. We'd love to get as many cars as possible on the grid for a 20 min race and then, if interest & commitment is high enough then maybe we can do another Modsports/ Special/ Super Saloons etc type race at the end of the season before developing a new series for such cars (& similar cars) for next year.

If you have such a car, please get in touch with the CSCC to register your interest. It is intended that this Modsports/ Special Saloon revival race is FREE (although you will be invited to join the club @ £35!).

If anyone has contact details for Mr Maguire & Dr Enderby then I'd be grateful if you could pass them on as I am sure that we'd love to invite them along. Perhaps Dr Enderby can be persuaded to re-commission his car??? We already have interest from several owners of original cars & this looks like taking off well.

I remember Bernie !

[QUOTE=Keith M Taylor;2816490]Hi guys
A bit more info on John Maguire space frames....i had a quick look and found no mention of a Bernie Saunders (Used to do a lot of development work with David Vizard) in this thread so... who ran a yellow Maguire from the Cotswold's, Based workshop near Stow-on-the-Wold, Huntsmans Quarries, we took all the measurements from Bernie`s car, with Johns permission and built the main frame myself. Bought all the F/G panels & Front/rear coil springs from John, this was at the old workshop in Stony some thing Rd in Coventry, Roof, doors, front, rear panels boot ect..and got it all in and on a mini van, and back to Cheltenham in one go!!
__________________________________________________________________

I remember Bernie Saunders, we used to go and see him at the quarry.

He was doing hillclimbs and sprints with a conventional mini in the same yellow colour scheme as his Maguire car, sharing it with his (brother ?)

The Maguire car was circuit raced for Bernie by Malcolm Allen and very quick it was too, having an 8 port engine on fuel injection.

He had got the upper hand of our Maguire car at Donington one day but the throttle linkage broke and my brother went on to win !

Malcolm had a huge accident in it, I think it was at Combe and it caught fire, he was quite badly burned but both he and the car were repaired to fight another day.

I have attached a poor quality photo of Bernies car at Combe.

Do you know if Bernie is still around the area ?

By the increase in average earnings over the past 31 years... GBP1,000 in 1980 is GBP4,950 in 2011... so you can work out what all of that lot would be in today's terms.

Interesting little document there thanks thrasher! Welcome to our forum!

As davyboy rightly intimates, that's a sizeable outlay for equipment, but perhaps not unreasonable although one would also need an engine!

If I had some spare cash and knew how to put one of those things together in the 80's i'd have bought one.

Yeah I remember lots of Mini's, Escorts and Imps etc in the classifieds. I used to dream as a schoolboy that if I ran the paper shop and not just a paper round, maybe, just maybe.....

I was offered a race winning Stiletto roller for GBP1,500 in 1989 and thought it was overpriced so I turned the guy down

Those certainly were the days, though incomes were a lot less too. This was before the days of ' it's motor racing so we'll treble the price'.

The high tensile flywheel bolts stick out as being a bit pricey compared to other bits - almost the cost of a set of race pistons.

I agree with your comments on George as a driver - never met him as an engineer.

Get it registered for the CSCC Special Saloons/ Modsporets/ Thundersports/ Donington GT Revival race at Mallory on August Bank Holiday Monday!

Its an invitation race and there are already 40 people interested but you never know. The CSCC are keen to establish a regular race series for these sorts of cars next year, so if you are interested e-mail the club.
