Miss V8 Supercar

I really enjoyed this piece from The Age today, commenting on the V8 Supercar grid girl competition. Worth a read: http://www.theage.com.au/news/tv--ra...387568494.html

Quote:
"That the women in question are willing participants and, for all I know, nuclear physicists, wasn't enough to assuage my uneasiness about it all, particularly at a time when male athletes' attitudes to women have come under scrutiny after a series of sexual assaults by footballers."
Uneasiness. Good word. The whole thing makes me uneasy. The Miss V8 Supercar competition made for truly appalling television, but that aside the competition itself is a relic of a time long gone. And just about everyone in society - certainly gun-shy sports administrators - have realised this.

Everyone except those in V8 Supercar racing. While his colleagues in sports administration go to GREAT lengths to develop anti-sexism policies, Tony Cochrane was on national television sitting catwalk-side judging the swimsuit competition, his arms around a bevy of scantily-clad beauties.

Quote:
"Take them away and what would the respective sports lose? How many real fans would stop going to rugby league or motor racing if there were no scantily clad accoutrements?"
None, obviously. So let's get with the program.

Strong sentiments there Jason, being a red blooded Australian male from the country, I rather like a scantily clad young lass in Lycra, and reckon they go just great with the V8's!

Sadly another case of the late sipping set taking political correctness to the Extreme

peckstar has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
and while we are at it. lets get rid off all those magazines that have pictures of models in. every women in the world should be covered from head to toe in clothing and we should close every magazine that promotes any form of fashion.

the v8 supergirl competition is a legit modeling competition which offers a fantastic prize at the end for the winner

Phase3 what is a late sipping?

Jason i notice on the grids the girls actually seem covered from nech to low thigh. This seems to have been a change lately and an appropriate one too.

Nothing wrong with a good latte

Is the competition actually good for the girls? Not sure when you consider most attend rounds at their own cost (other than accomodation/meals) and the grand prize is to be V8Supergirl for the 2006 season, with prizes worth a huge $40,000.....

The model's profile will be raised for sure, but I dont know what that will mean for Renee Maurer, the 2005 V8Supergirl.... who has been in plenty of pictures, but not exactly used in raising the profile of the sport.... or being trained to be a #10 spokesmodel or something....

Pit Babes

I always thought the point of pit babes was to remind competitors that there really are some things in life with 'higher maintenance' than race cars.

As a marshal, I've often shared the grid with some of the grid girls, and often have a chat. Apart from the fact that in most series they're paid to be there (which is more than I am) without exception, every one of them loves it. They like (most of) the attention, being part of a big event and being around the teams and drivers. They relish in having their pictures taken (I've even known some to miffed because they weren't and the one next to them was). As long as they're enjoying it, why stop them? And if it helps their career, better still.

You could even things up by having grid boys too, but my guess is most of them will be looking at the spanners or cars thnking "I'd rather be doing that..."

Many of the V8Supercar drivers have no idea about motorsport categories other than their own, so why limit the fury at the ladies??

Did anyone else notice in The V8 Supergirl TV special, that the producers managed to mis-spell TC's name TWICE.

The first was a caption when he appeared at the final dinner - and then in the credits, they spelt it another way (wrong again) !

I laughed at first - but then I realised how serious this could become if TC found out.

Then I laughed a lot more !
