Budget Tyres

Are they worth buying or would you all recommend going for 'named' tyres

Depends on many things. How budget? To what type of car are they being fitted? Retreads or not?

Suzuki Wagon, Not remoulds new tyres. How budget. A New tyre for the car costs about £60 but you can get a budget one for about half that

Go for it then, high speed performance isn't going to be a consideration. If they were dangerous they wouldn't be able to seel them. They may not last quite as long as a named brand though. You pays your money.....

However a budget tyre may only last half as long. Check the initial tread depth, one of the reasons they are so cheap is they don't use as much rubber.

I have bought a tyre brand called 'Stunners' for the past few years, their not bad, supposedly Pirreli own them, not sure about that though. For my old car a Mondeo i could get one of the 'stunner' tyres for about 36 quid fitted, over two years ago now though.

I need two new tyres soon for my current car, going for proper branded tyres this time though, Pirreli i think.

I did drive a car with two cheapies on the front and in the wet it kept locking up. That's what I'm worried about

That's not necessarily a problem with the tyres.

Well according to the owner, she had the same problem and changed the whells round, and put the two Michelins off the back onto the front and the cheapys on the back and it doesn't do it now

I still blame the cheapy 'stunner' tyres for my accident on the M6 4 years ago, nearly wrote the Mondeo off after running into the back of a Hyundai Lantra, no ABS though and the front wheels just locked up.

But that accident never stopped me from buying the same tyre again and again, the only real reason i will buy Pirrelli this time round is because i can get a good deal for two tyres at a garage in Boston. 60 quid for two, amazingly.

I'd never buy cheap tyres. Tyres are a safety item - those few extra metres it takes to stop on a wet road with 'budget' tyres can make the difference between a heart-stopping moment & an expensive mistake.

Before buying tyres, take a look at:

http://www.tyretest.com/index.html

- reports on tyres by actual users.

Generally the difference in price between a budget tyre and a decent one isn't more than a few quid anyway (unless you're going for things like Michelin Pilots), I'd rather pay the extra than bolt junk to my car. My current Avons only cost £36 each anyway and they work really well

quite a few of the budget tyres are made by major brand manufacturers, who want to have as much of the market share as possible but dont want to "cheapen " there own brand,

a good few years ago i worked for the biggest uk independant wholesaler and retail outlet (independant of tyre companies).

they used to sell a tyre called a diplomat as a budget, it was infact a dunlop, made to the same specs in the same factories with the same rubber as the dunlop brand tyres, but was cheaper and didn't carry the dunlop name anywhere on it.

so not all budget tyres are rubbish, you just need to do some research

SpawnyWhippet has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
If you are really concerned about cost and don't want remoulds, how about part worns? I used to get them when I was a student running around in an old Ford Sierra. I could get name brands like Michelins with 8mm tread fitted for 30 quid. Never had a problem with them. I was doing high speed, high mileages from Germany to London all the time due to my dual degree course, so a set of tyres would only last 6 months. Just make sure you inspect them yourself before they fit them, to make sure the things didn't come off a wrecked car and had a dodgy repair.

Ok, here's my view on it: I have bought cheap tyres before when I've been on a budget, and they were poo. Just driving normally they couldn't last 15,000! I had a Mazda 323 that had the original Michelins on the back tyres for 95k, by which time it was 22 years old! However, I've also gone for the next price up, and they were much better, giving more grip and lasting considerably longer. Nangkang were the ones I think, £55 per tyre for 225/60R15s (BMW 7 series). Much quieter than the Pirellis at speed too.
