Qatar is to invest heavily in developing its current circuit for F1.

By 2015 F1 will be a completely nocturnal race series, held solely in the far east, but for a single novelty race at Silverstone, which will be held at the ungodly hour of 1pm, and be illuminated by the sunshine.

It's disappointing that so many FIA/FOM negotiations about the possibility of staging more night races are being made public in the run-up to this year's Singapore Grand Prix. It seems to be taking away the novelty and, to some degree, the uniqueness of this year's event. This latest information from Qatar isn't helping the situation much either.

Hmm surely they should wait and see if the night race is actually a success before they make the whole calender nocturnal?

I wonder if companies like Hella have a hand in this?

One thing that will be nice is seeing glowing brakes at night!!

Drivers will complain about the brightness and Coulthard will step forward to call the intensely lit conditions absolutely unsafe, criticizing the choice to drive "in blinding conditions" and call the GPDA into action. Massa will go on record to state that he doesn't like it and any deterioration in his lap times and points turnout will be down to the adverse lighting, not his spectacular talent.

Also, Webber will call the other drivers "a bunch of limp-wristed, sun-shy pansies" and Kimi, then retired as 4-times WDC, will mumble something about "never really looking at the track but being occupied with thinking about moose anyway" whenever somebody manages to replace the bottle at his lips with a microphone.

Button in the meantime will still be in a struggling Honda, demanding a quicker car for 2016 and expressing his optimism that things will finally turn around and play into his hands.

Its not all bad, if theres a track that needs a good rework then its Losail. Its so bad it made MotoGP boring.

Just what we need, another race in a barren featureless desert! Why not tarmac a field somewhere and hold every race there, only with different layouts marked out by traffic cones. Spa Francorchamps anyone?!!

F1 hasn't had a proper night race as of yet. They haven't even tested under these special conditions because teams could not agree on financing such a test. So all talk of night races is complete rubbish until after the Singapore GP of 2008. With so less preparation, F1 risks another "2005 US GP" styled debacle at that event.

Once upon a time F1 was a series where every race had its on unique footprint. Innovation was encouraged and each promoter organised a unnique event that was open to all those prepared to prepare a car to the reigning technical specifications, whether they had built it or not.

enthusiasts knew that each ecircuit had it's own idiosyncracies but that was what made F1 fascinating....
Now we have a closed shop and a small library of rules and regulations all supposed to make the sport more 'exciting' and equitable.....
Many races are run in soulless auditoriums that have a distinct sameness feel about them, as though all the local landscapes have been erased and the cars are performinjg in much the same 'tunnel' week after week....That shouldn'r be a surprise considering the same chap designed many of them,...

I felt after Melbourne that we were in for a bumper season and a great year to follow last years.... but apparently not...
Now we have people lining up for night races....
And I wonder how itis all going to turn out.... I am not against the concept but..... have they thought of all the fishooks in this proposal.....?

Did anyone see the MotoGP night race held in Qatar. I didn't think it was anything special. It was just like day time except it cost billions and put a large hole in the ozone layer. And the TV coverage was actually worse. There were only a few minutes of highlights on RTE in Ireland who normally show all the MotoGP races live and BBC put theirs on BBC3.

Bernie keeps saying more night races and no Aussie GP without lights but does he actually care what the people watching want.

One night race in Singapore is great. But leave it at that. I want to get up at an unreasonable hour to watch the first race in Australia. Its tradition. The season starting in Bahrain in 06 didnt feel right at all.

I agree completely.

I had been looking forward to the novelty of an F1 night race, but after watching the Moto GP race, my enthusiasm for Singapore has been not so much dampened, as completely extinguished.

As you point out, the track is required to be lit up so brightly, that it may as well be daytime. As a spectacle it was a complete damp squib.

Looks like the Toro Rosso complaints though are things other series have already said isnt as much of a problem for their drivers. I'm sure F1 guys will not have problems with being distracted by camera flashes but another round of night practice probably wouldnt be a bad thing for Bernie to pry his wallet open and pay for if he really wants night races. Im guessing Singapore wouldnt like the extra day of the track construction but King Bernie definitely has the cash probably in his pocket to fund it. But then I'm prejudiced cause I want to see a night F1 race, if it doesnt work I'll be the first to call for it to be dropped.

One night race is fine. Its a novelty. When you have all the Asian races, of which there are a lot and a lot more to come at night, the novelty is gone.

Its like street races. Monaco, which is normally a really boring race to be honest, is a novelty because its the only real street race in F1. By adding Singapore, Valencia and Abu Dhabi, and I'm sure more like New Dehli, Paris and so on, Monaco is no longer special. You just get a race around streets where no one has a hope of overtaking.

It just strange to be converting half the races to night races before the first one has even taken place.

According to motorsport-total.com the Singapore race has been rescheduled to 14.00 local time. Some drivers have been diagnosed with night blindness. The FIA had asked to the teams to not let those particular drivers start, but as the drivers fulfilled all requirements for the S-license the teams didn't have to comply and none did.

Ergo, the race is at 2 o'clock local time now.
