Final Round of the British Sprint Championship
After the August Bank Holiday Colerne event (Rd 13 of the SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship) the championship is set for a cracking final round at Aintree on the 8th September. The current Top Twelve positions are as follows:
1= Dan Pickett & Matt Oliver 118 pts 3 Mark Smith 89 pts 4 Nick Algar 76 pts 5 Bill Oliver 73 pts 6 Tom Potter 73 pts 7 Kevin Lealan 64 pts 8 Stewart Robb Snr 59 pts 9 Steve Miles 56 pts 10 Dave Sims 53 pts 11 Terry Holmes 52 pts 12 Andrew Platt 44 pts With the head-to-head between Pickett & Oliver the main talking point the whole outcome is thrown up in the air by the entry of Roy Dawson in the GR55. There are also the Stewart Robbs in their shared MP88 so what looks on paper like a heads you win tails I lose situation is far more complex. The battle for the remaining places is also getting complicated with 4th down to 11th liable to change dramatically. As the admission charge is a meagre £3.00 plus there are still plenty of vacancies for marshals consult your diaries and see whether a trip Up North might not be justified! |

I reckon championships are more interesting with more "back story". My little contribution is as follows:
Nick Algar was clearly on fire at Anglesey on Saturday, recording a 103 point somethingorother on first practice. This was about as good as he did at the June meeting when the track was a good 10 degrees C warmer & this Saturday a number of us acted as if Rocket were a corner of more than 360 degrees . Unfortunately, it didn't count as BTD as it wasn't a timed run & I understand the Firehawk blew a head gasket as those got underway. Hope it was only that & he gets it fixed for this Saturday. BTW I guess dropped scores will be pretty significant too. Anyone care to do the what-ifs? |

Dan Pickett (11); Matt Oliver (8); Mark Smith (5); Nick Algar (4); Tom Potter (3) and Steve Miles (3). Kev Lealan would have been dropping a 3 pointer IF he had been entered! Thus with all the possible permutations of scores I would probably be hear this time next week still trying to work out the possibilities!!! |

Oh go on then. Saturday proved to be a very special day as what I believe to be a record crowd saw the Outright Course record lowered no less than three times! The winner of the run-off was Roy Dawson who stamped his authority on the meeting when in practice he unofficially broke the record! He qualified fastest by some margin and in the run-off lowered the record by over a second leaving it at 36.03 seconds. Also inside the old Course record were... Stewart Robb Junior on only his first visit to Aintree; and Matt Oliver on only his second visit - last year's event being run in a deluge! Stewart Robb Senior was fourth in the run-off, again on his first visit to the Liverpool course. In the Championship Matt Oliver's late season pace was too much for Dan Pickett as the MP58 driver could only manage fifth leaving Matt a delighted champion! Roy Dawson is undecided as to whether or not to continue competing in 2008 but I suspect the hunger is still there. Other notable performances were .... Bill Oliver who stopped the clocks at an incredible 1.81 seconds for the first 64 foot! Nick Algar who decimated the 1600 racing Car class & Championship records! In the classes there were new records for Stuart Nelson in the 1600cc Rover K powered Haggispeed Sports Libre; Simon Bainbridge in the awesome 4.2 Twin Turbocharged Four-wheel-drive Audi TT Replica; Nick Algar & Roy Dawson. Liverpool Motor Club ran a superb meeting with 688 starts in the day averaging 100 starts per hour throughout the day! Finally the Top Twelve was one of the best I have seen for long time. There were close calls and even the odd spin! And to cap it all the former outright Course record holder John Garnett was there to see his 2000 record broken! |
