These days you need a Bank Loan to visit a Grand Prix, it isn't exclusive to the British Grand Prix. However, this is a complete farce, Silverstone and most of the circuits in Bernie's circus would rather spend money on slow mickey mouse corners with run-off and improved VIP and Pitlane facilities than fan amenities.

I've rarely heard of fans being turned away from an event, no matter the weather.

You rarely hear of fans being turned away from Silverstone too.

Anyway, Alonsos pole lap was sublime.

Acres and acres of hardstanding, a coffee and burger stall and rows and rows of double deckers at 7am, a lift straight to the main gates avoiding all the traffic and the same buses whisked us back at the end of the day. Hardly any queuing at all. I might even consider going again in the future if similar arrangements were put in place.
You know you really can't say things like that! When Gillett suggested bussing in for the abortive Donington development EVERYONE rejected the thought outright. Heresy to even consider it.

I can't remember any events in the UK turning away paying customers either. The Isle of Wight Festival was a complete wash out and people were queuing in their cars for 9 hours but they didn't get told not to come. Wimbledon has coped fairly well.

Silverstone been a complete farce and the PR and Marketing since the event started has been terrible. I'm just glad the drivers are still helping to make it entertainment for the fans.
Lots of stuff been cancelled this year due to the weather. Maybe not high end stuff (although some), but things like country shows, endless school sports days etc.

Try google for a really quite lengthy list.

That is the usual type of stuff that gets cancelled though - some of those things would get cancelled if it was too hot! An event like Silverstone can't really can't be compared to anything like that, its apples and oranges. For a start, I'd likely guess that most of those events are pretty much local only and don't attract people from across the country/Europe/the World.

If things like the larger music festivals, other massive sporting events or one-offs like the Queen's Barge up the Thames and the majority of the Olympic Relay had been cancelled, then maybe it would be a better comparison.

Most of the larger events that I can think of have been cancelled either due to the economic climate/low ticket sales or due to clashes with the Olympics.

If getting into Silverstone is going to be bad, getting out will be even worse!

I gave up with GP's in the mid-90's - happy smiling stewards on the way in but a free for all on the way out. Last time I went I exited via an enlarged gap in a hedge... my friends weren't so lucky and spent 4 hours getting out of the car park.

After that experience I came away with the impression that the VIP/Paddock Club punters were the only ones that mattered to Silverstone.

In fairness I went to the Britcar 24 hour last October, glorious weather and the 'new' Silverstone was a huge improvement but there were only a few thousand spectators.

Anyway, I thought the composure and control on Alonso's pole lap was the mark of a driver at the top of his game.

Business as usual for Maldonado.

Crazy start of the race but lost a bit of interest once it settled down.

I don't understand Ferrari's decision to bring Alonso in for his final stop so early. He was still running reasonable laptimes at that point.
