Mazda RX-8 and Rotary Engines

I'll be test driving a Mazda RX-8 very soon and was wandering what people thought about the RX-8 and rotary powered cars in general.

Is the power delivery very different from regular cars. I've read the engine feels like a motorbike engine, being so smooth and progressive.

it seemslike a solid right power source eh?, although i hear it burns oil at an alarming rate.
fill ups needed between oil changes.
interestingly enough it seems to do very well in the Formula mazda series(or star mazda) the new ones that is...they say it is capable of 170mph in the formula cars. funny that it seems the spec of the toyota atlantics...
so in regards to rotary power.
it seems like a blakc art in tuning the buggers but they sound raspy good when they are and at nearly 250 hp with no turbo it can only get better...and you can alway add a third rotor to it...

Top Gear mag had a long-term one for testing and they said that it didn't really use that much oil up, but it's still important that you check the levels at each fuel fill-up to be on the safe side.

It seems like a very nice car, revvy, fun to drive - just make sure if you're going to buy one that you get it in a sensible colour!

imull has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
folks looked at one in anthracite sort of colour when their mazda was in for a service. lovely car but they chose a Jag instead, and wont insure me

the salesman there showed us his RX-8 that he had had done in a custom colour at obscene cost but looked absolutely stunning in a metallic version of the pupleish colour that hte foil is on dairy milk chocolate bars

What ever you do, DO NOT shut it off until it has warmed up (something showing on the temp gage) It will flood and be a nasty bugger to start the next time - possibly a trip to the dealer on a towtruck.

the reason they use oil is because oil is injected in to the engine for lubrication of the seals.

I've been driven in one but not actually drove the thing. True the engine seems very smooth in delivery or at least it sounded so. Very small rear windows don't allow for much plus a centre consul that spears the already cramped rear seats apart makes it much less roomier. But the suicide rear doors are pretty cool.
