I think this is just Ecclestone dropping a gentle hint to the authorities in Monaco.
One thing you shouldn't do with Ecclestone is ignore what he says. |

It's not surprising, Bernie lost the plot a while ago. Probably time CVC Capital Partners replaced him. The next round of Concorde Agreement negotiations could be interesting - but in the sense of the Chinese proverb.

I wouldn't mind if Ecclestone was dropped, tbh.

Seriously, take what Bernie says with a truckload of salt. He says what he says to create a reaction, in this case, to keep the Monaco organisers on their toes.
F1 without Monaco would be like the British without their tea. |

Monaco doesn't have to cough up to The Midget - and quite rightly so. The Monaco GP is so special an event it would be in F1's interest to pay to race there.

I was referring to the sport in general's interest. Your point is valid though, ideally that could be answered simply as "FOTA", but sadly there's the midget and CVC Capital Partners involved.

Martin Whitmarsh is already struggling to keep FOTA together. Quote:

The best thing Bernie has said for a long time, Monaco is a farce!
And please don't harp on at me about tradition! |

Who needs Monaco? When you can race around the docks of Valencia...

Ironically, that was supposedly part of the original thinking behind Bernie/CVC giving Valencia (and to a lesser extent, Singapore) a GP, as it was supposed to put pressure on Monaco to start paying. As has become apparent though, the industrial setting of Valencia hasn't exactly challenged the rather more glamorous Monaco GP.

Two, no three things here.
1. Bernie is posturing 2. Bernie is flexing his muscles.... (the only two things worth having are the two names, F1 and Ferrari...... 3. Bernie is revealing the colours of his innermost being (paper green and gold) |

It's more than just the history of Formula One. It's about the history of motor racing. The Monaco GP is more than twenty years older than Formula One itself. We're not just talking Juan Manuel Fangio, we're talking William Grover-Williams, Rudi Caracciola, Tazio Nuvolari, Louis Chiron ...
Ideally anyone - and by anyone I mean Bernie Ecclestone or any other employee of CVC Capital Partners - who considers removing Monaco from the calendar would be placed in a Groundhog Day style timeloop while watching Two Girls One Cup (if you haven't seen it, you don't want to). Sadly that's a physical impracticality. |

I dunno, this makes perfect sense to me...
Given the tight and hilly nature of the Monaco circuit, I don't see any obvious place you could use Bernie's shortcut idea on the current layout... |
