It said in Autosport that he wouldn't, Stoddart will stick with Bruni.

It's just unbelievable that there is no better Belgian driver than Bas Leinders...

Lets play "Name a famous Belgian driver...."
Weren't Mollekens or Saelens ( spelling? ) more promising a few years back though? Bas is ok, he's won in Dallara Nissan. |

David Saelens is a better driver than Bas, for sure.
But where the hell is he... Was Bertrand Gachot Belgian by the way?? |

Yes, he was. You had Thierry Boutsen as well.

Didn't Gachot race under the European flag? IIRC he was half french, half belgian and brought up in luxembourg. Saelens is now in ALMS in a works panoz after an unsuccessful season in DTM.

If I am right Philippe Adams was the last Belgian who "raced" in F1.
Leinders is to old (and not good enough?) to start a real F1 career. Last edited by FIRE; 7 Aug 2004 at 20:16. |

I found this for Belgian F1 drivers...
Johnny Claes (1950-1955) Paul Frere (1952-1956) Olivier Gendebien (1958-1961) Jacky Ickx (1967-1979) Thierry Boutsen (1983-1993) Philippe Adams (1994) Source http://paddockf1.tripod.com/belgium.html#present |

What about Marc Goossens?
I'm sure he's better than Bas too! |

On that website I posted above it's written that Marc Goossens is too old for F1.

Marc Goosens is very underrated and could do a job for Minardi.

Eric van der Poele was Belgian as well - a lost talent if ever there was one. Erik Comas is another they missed off.
Leinders did indeed crash on his first ever lap in a F1 car, which is pretty amusing. He's got an OK CV, but nothing to say 'good enough for F1'. |

Erik Comas is French.
Bloody good driver too. He could have won races in the right car. |

I think, if Golden Palace.com and some Benelux sponsors raised their sponsorship enough to take over the principal ex-Wilux Minardi sponsorship spaces for next Belgian GP, then Bas would race there. If not, we'll wait until next year to see what happens.

England seems to have had mroe of the opposite drivers in recent years - guys with more talent than money (Wilson, Hynes, Kerr, Paffett et al). In the 60s and 70s a lot of funded English guys were on the grid, David Purely was one of the least impressive, despite his famed heroics in trying to save Roger Williamson. |
