Use of "Gravel Trap"

Not going to add to ever lengthing threads below. But shouldn't topics not concerning marshalling be posted in the Gravel Trap?

do all of the topics on this forum help attract new marhals or inform others of issues??

Just wonder if it's helping to attract people new to marshalling or would it put people of from joining in??

thats all well and good, but, some of the these things have drifted on from threads which you cant really just stop and drag over when there might be a chance of them diverting a little.

over in the gravel trap is very pleasant but, you tend to find you stick to places/people and subjects you know,

and also if you turn round and wave a red rag at a bull, ie dont do that then what do people expect,

oh and as to the question of attract new people, well, do you spend your whole day weekend after weekend being deadly serious on your post. so why not let them see the camaradie, banter p*ss take that happens on post or should we be showing them we are all straight faced, no nonsence marshals. or would that deter people?

SSS

Never known you to have a serious conversation on post, unless the doodoo is hitting the whirly thing. Part of the attraction of marshalling is the fun we have on post, at appropriate times.

i think the thing that will put people off is not the banter but the insults thrown at the person who made a comment about the level of chit chat, which i quite enjoy reading

A follow on to Baldy Man's query, about marshal's grading, and the different practices/systems with regard to cars and bikes.

I wasn't involved in that conversation - the only licence I was interested in was the bar!

I'm not saying that we all shouldn't have a laugh.. we all do that on post - otherwise there wouldn't be any point in turning up every week!! but it's just that I don't think the level of 'chat' on this forum will encourage the total novice to join in.

Marshalling isn't necessarily about this type of banter all of the time. Chat rooms and marshalling aren't the same thing.. and I fear that we might start excluding people.

Sorry to get serious for a moment - but I think the future of marshalling is a serious business..

Not sure I'm explaining myself to well! but i guess it's a case of doing everything in moderation (I once knew a girl like that, and it was extremely frustrating).

no but what encourages people to marshal, and its not the level of chat on a forum, its being treated on post properly by organisers and other marshals, by decent licensing by the governing bodies, and many other things, but chit chat on a computer, i dont think that is a major contributor to people wanting to try tiddly winks instead

It's not true I do join in with the chat, but can you keep it in simpler terms.

With the genuine fear of making this thread too clicky....

Since we had Brushpusher's sibling assisting with the marshals raffle today (nice wine you won me young Alex), I think it's only fair that we have Novice's sibling calling out raffle names tomorrow with a French accent, peut-etre.

Dan Friel

Thank you.
I completely agree with your sentiments and objective of starting this thread.
Certain threads within the Gravel Trap do appeal to obviously many others and me.
Yes within the "Marshals Forum" there should be humour, banter and reminders to some who are caught being, not hypocritical, but the words black, calling and pot / kettle spring to mind.

Yes I have been guilty of using these pages to tease certain characters that I know.
However, I am conscious that this can be a distraction and a turn off to those who are unfamiliar with the background.

I am assured that are by certain persons within the MSA and its commities read these pages .
The repeatedly frivolous and cliché comments (eg within this thread) have been used as an excuse to dismiss any serious comments. This may be wrong, illogical and a misuse of ten-tenths by those in authority - but respect has always to be earned.

My apologies if I have offended anyone who enjoys using the marshals forum for comments that you and I think would be most suited to "Gravel Trap".

I sometimes pop my head in here, and read, as I'm quite interested in marshalling, though not able to do it yet obviously.

The thing with this forum is that it seems to be a forum for Marshals. As opposed to a forum about marshalling. The F1 forum, for example, is a forum about F1, not a forum for F1 fans, and if someone started an off-topic thread there, it would get moved.

It just seems to me that the Marshals forum should be here for Marshalling issues, in the same way that other forums are, while off-topic stuff is in the GT.

I agree that adding silly comments to a serious thread is completely unnecessary and leads people away from the point of the thread

but if a bit of friendly banter in a thread set up with this in mind and it gives a bit of a laugh to those reading it then all well and good. If the silly threads are not interesting then don't read them.

I'd rather read and be involved in some of the more relaxed threads than those which spend most of the time whining about marshalling and marshalling conditions which are definitely not going to encourage people to become or stay marshals.
