Heated screen is a must, by 12Volts and a simple switch or by a blower and ducting/vents stuck everywhere!
Us hillclimbers are very soffistikated ya noww.

Sunday morning on a damp hillclimb in Wales......bliss.....

It is a pain already with getting the 2 part lola bodyoff in a cramped hillclimb paddock, though Mrs Hillclimber and I are getting good at the last manouver nowadays..

Sortof Wales...

Loton Park hillclimb last year about July.
It's the Welsh side of Shrewsbury.

See, it can shine in the West Midlands because all the factories are closed now and all the jobs gone to China!

I agree with Keith the car is stunning and a real credit to you, having read some of the thread I thought this picure I found in a 1979 programme might be of interest to you.

I cant read the text but 1979 is too early for the lola S2000 car this is the T290 modified by Pilbeam car

I think that may be the first Tony Dickinson Skoda that he built on the early lola chassis before he dis his second on the Lola T 490 which became mine after Alan Humberstone crashed the t 490/Skoda and was re-build on the car I have and Karmann Ghia body.

I haven't seen that pic before so could be wrong. I'm sure Drifwood will clarify.

Secondly, thanks for the recent kind words on this car. I'm suffering from a definite lack of motivation to run the car and this is down to the weber situation that could be resolved this friday.

If all works then i will be back in business!

car 1 was the ex Alec Poole/chris meek 2 litre BDG car more of a steel shell this car wa sbuilt in 74 ish TD gets it in 77
car 2 was lola T292 bought from 1978 LM team Cloud engineering first runs in 79
spare tub bits n bobs built into a car tub cut down to fit narrow skoda body done by Mike Pilbeam has hart 420R fitted
car 3 Lola T490 S2000 car FT200 fitted Hart 420R i think first runs in 82

now 911 what the hell are you playing at now with Piper GTR LM foto!!??

The Piper I saw at the Autosport show for sale and what a great body!

Had a surprise last night when a friend came round with a spare set of rebuilt webers for a 911....

Chokes are small (they are for a 2.2 litre) and the jetting all wrong, but if mine are condemned by Hi-Tech I can swop over to these in a few minutes.

Won't deliver the power but if it all runs smooooothly then I know what I have to do next.

Wish tomorrow was friday!

Now:
I've been told of a gent called Ian Hall from Bristol who has a mould for a 'glass Karmann Ghia body. Anyone know of this man please so I can contact him?

Never heard of another Karmann Ghia body having been made Graham, which of course doesn't mean there never was. Have you tried contacting David ?

What an interesting morning it turned out to be.

Firstly, I cannot recommend Hi-Tech enough to anyone. Mick is one-of-a-kind and so cool, calm and collected.

About the same age as me and with such a co-incidence of who we know and what we've done in the past. Made the effort well worth it.

Got the car there and body off and onto the rollers. After a brief about the car we removed the filters, primed the carbs and the engine came into life (slowly). Ticked over well and Mick looked a bit puzzled at what he saw on the Sun readout.

The side of the engine with the (now audible) bangs only had one choke just about working on the low speed circuit. The other two were 'dead' bugger all happening at tickover, no fuel in there at all.

The other bank was great, going well, flowing well.

Easing the primary jets out (loose) in the body cured the bangs as fuel was 'leaking' to the lazy chokes.

Mick stripped the top off the 'flaming' carb and cleared various passageways out with compressed air, they are fully open to say the least, but still two chokes were dead at tick-over.

A blip on the pedal and all was well on the high speed circuit in both carbs.

After a bit of changing jets he got the carb working, balanced and not a bang could be heard.

Mick got into the car (he used to race T 492's) and gave the car a bit of a run on the rollers, but it still was not right. Back to the jets and back into the hot seat.

With a smile on his face he said he would 'drive the car up Shelsley Walsh' ie pedal to the metal......in 4th.

Good grief!

Does this car ever sound full-on at full chat.

The result was 194 bhp at the wheels, 30 bhp transmission loss so 224 bhp @ 5658 rpm.

Torque was 200 lbft @ 4500, 170 @ 2500,

The car took full throttle at 1500 and ran right through to 5600/6000.


Mick confirmed all the sparks are there, all the electrics are 100%.

In closing, 2 1/2 hours later, he felt the 40's too small for the engine size, and showed me the difference sizes of the emulsion tubes of the 40 compared to the 46's. Massive difference.

Although the car now runs etc, he suggested I scrap the carbs and get some 46's!
Why the one carb will not pull fuel at tickover is strange.

So, where an I now?

- Carbs that only just work and one not realy well at tick-over
- £750 of rolling road costs that should really have been 250 at most

This engine really has cost a fortune, far over the sensible costs, but there we are, a bit wiser and a bit older.

Sounded bloody great though!

190 BHP? you could have had that from a 2 litre pinto with bigger cams twin webers !
OK i jest a little a duratec would have given you that power for not a lot of $$
anyway have u looked at jenvey porsche FI system for all the dickn around you have had you would have owned a kit by now and been running and enough $ left over to take me and Mrs HC out for dinner

what is the car in the foto ahead of your car on rollers

194 at the wheels, so 224 flywheel.

You are dead right on the Duratec but would one give 200 lbft?

Anyway, here we are and it will do me for 2010 and screaming along a 12 foot wide hill climb track flat out in 4th...

The 'S2000' car in front of mine was a bit special. It is/was a Lola 590 I think, but had been highly modified (stiffened) by a real race engineer. It has a Duratec etc and was really nice. Lots of tub bracing every where.

Mick had lots of nice stuff in there and more stashed away.

I have looked at the Jenvey set-up and it is VERY nice.



I have a few other jobs to do then i can enter the first hillclimb of the season at Prescott hill.

have a few other jobs to do then i can enter the first hillclimb of the season is that cutting the grass putting up shelves in the study before mummy lets you out to play or doing work on the car?
have looked at the Jenvey set-up and it is VERY nice.
so why did you not buy them?

The house seems to come second to this car!
Don't have grass, have moss instead....
Have 5 speeds but you try getting fifth on the finish 'straight' in this thing.

Jenvey + DTA ecu with loom is about £3K + mapping

There is the small prob of the flat fan being right in the way of the cross linkage, so spend £3K and start cutting it up.

PMO's will bolt on and run. Install and running in about 60 mins. Still £3K though unless Mrs Hillclimber can be persuaded to holiday in USA this year.(ie no chance, Italy calls again)

Why don't you try a hillclimb in one of your cars?

Off to one now over the weekend and it's raining...

1 a holiday in usa willbe a bit cheaper than Italy howver the grub is not as interesting or teh women to look at!
2 I dont do hillclimbs cos there are no cars to overtake or wheel to wheel into a corner with
3 are PMO better than Jenvey FI? fan is least of problem if Jenvey is better option? and maybe resolve the domestic holiday issues !

And anyway, there are hard things to hit along the way, like stone walls and gate posts, so why bother?

Life is all about risk management, and there are plenty of risks that you will have to take, so why take extra ones that you dont have to simples

Rivers of water running through the Loton Paddock today..bloody horrid, so pleased that the Lola is dry in the garage. Same again tomorrow.

Chatting the carb thing through today with a few and it could be i should simply drill through all the primary ways and re-plug on the one carb. Nothing to loose since it is not right and everything to win (ie £3K).

The Jenvey engineers are hillclimbers and just 10 miles or less from me so could take the car there for a measure-up.

I feel the Xmas break work sheet growing.

Karmann Ghia body
Inject or carbs

In the mean time, driving the thing would be a good idea.

Did various jobs yesterday so just the body fixings to do and fill in the entries.
Need to check that gear shifter soon but i think i will make a new gear shifter and fulcrum bracket to weld onto the existing Lola shift tube in the tub, so having more shifter movement than is needed for the box.

Prefer to make a new one than butcher the stock Lola one.

i would plump for the FI kit ecu and get on with it then tell wife holiday is 1 week not 2 weeks get a divorce sell house and buy porsche 962 and sleep in that!!
