Define ideal?

What is most important?
Cheap?
Reliable?
Powerful?
Something that is easy to fit?
Something that needs work to make it powerful?
Turbo or N/A ?
FWD or RWD?

well you might want an mi16 engine but realistically you are going to be faster by fitting another 8v engine and improving other aspects of the car instead

Got some serious cash to burn? Me and my brother run a 1.4rallye on trackdays. Its only got 90bhp but will lap as fast as 1.9 205's with 155bhp at coombe

The reason: trick suspension and grippy tyres. We run a modified rear beam with turrets welded into the rear and coilovers fitted

mi16 would be the easiest option. It comes down to how much you want to invest in your car, this includes money and TIME. The shy is the limit with enough of both.

the only problem with the mi16 engine is it is prone to oil surge.
Cost wise it may be better to look at the the gti-6 engine from the 306 otherwise you will need to be looking at upgrades to stop oil starvation

If its track only the gti-6 box would be good too but not so good if the car is used on the road (though I managed ok in one of my cars )

The 8v is still a very capable engine and is certainly not the weakest link in the overall package
cams + throttlebodies or carbs and you have a very capable engine
