A1GP Driver selection

Alot of the talk about A1PG is about driver choice by the teams, (some agreement some disagreement).

A friend put the following question to me the other day and I was wondering what people think.

Would you prefer each country (where applicable) to give the A1 seat as a price for winning a national championship in that country.

Personally I think that may not be the best idea and would not work for all of the nations involved.

No i dont like that idea. I prefer the fact that the teams are able to, if they wish, have a different driver for each round. After all this series is all about the nations not the individual drivers. There are many drivers in A1 i hadnt heard of until now. Having one or two drivers per team and having to stick with them over a whole season IMO would make A1 less interesting from a viewers point of view.

Does every A1 nation have a national single seater championship?

No I dont think so, and if they do the best driver that country has to offer my not be racing in it.
For the record I completely agree with your first point. I loke A1 the way it is.

I only think that, to be more "nations competition", they should try to make each driver race one heat, instead of having one "spare driver" that is not suppoused to race at all during the weekend.

Giving the seat has a prize would make impossible for guys with V6 experience (piquet, lapierre, premat and many others) to race, because they're not national level drivers anymore. A1 GP would become a 2nd step junior series. (few countries have own F3 championships, for example).

It's a nice idea, but there's too many issues to make it work in practice - neglecting some drivers who A1gp is perfect for; the lack of national championships in some country - contrasted with with a large selection in others (which one is the relevant one). Plus, what when a foreign driver wins a National championship?
However, it is an interesting idea, and maybe giving the national winner a test (either on a Friday practice session or a "shootout") might be a nice reward for doing well, and perhaps if they're good enough lead to a full drive. But in theory, the teams should be considering such drivers anyway.
