GP2 Asia replacement round Imola

I better start this bit. this is race 3 & 4 of the GP2 Asia championship and will take place on March 18-20 and this is also the final round. if your are wondering why these guys had to go to Europe to finsih of its GP2 Asia Championship it is due to the fact that testing for the main championship is just 2 weeks after that. both races on Saturday 19 March and Sunday 20 March will start at 1.00pm, Just now wait to find out if Eurosport will go motorsport mad that weekend (already got fast bikes and WTCC that weekend and no clashing on the time front either)

The Imola track is currently under one foot of snow, with more snow forecast over the next 2 weeks..............good luck to them, It will be a good test for the all new Pirelli snow tyres

Wow, half of 2011 GP2 Asia dates will be held outside Asia... What a joke.

I think GP2 Asia had no choice in the matter as my opening post on this thread gave the reason why. Also the GP2 Asia drivers are looking forward to the races as most of them have not seen the track.

How can you say drivers are looking forward to racing at Imola in the winter, what good will it do them.

This is not a race its a test for the main series, and hardly a productive test at that to run these cars on this track with temperatures predicted to be somewhere between -1 and + 3 degrees it will be the most expensive weekend these teams have ever encountered, Dalara must be rubbing their hands together. How they think the Pirelli's will cope is beyond me when they couldn't even perform in the 'cold' of Abu Dhabi...

GP2 Asia died in Bahrain, I only hope when-if it is reincarnated it stays in Asia not the deserts of the Middle East or frozen Europe

the tyre performance is a fair point.

i guess paul ricard is already booked around that weekend, or perhaps imola did a deal the organisers can't possibly refuse, especially if they're facing a shortfall in their own budget for the season as a result of bahrain (understandably) bailing out.

Don't think it was ever in what most people regard as 'Asia' but 'Middle East'?Maybe a better tittle would be 'Winter Series'?
As to drivers looking forward to racing ,I think any worth the name enjoy anything they are offered.Does it really get that cold in the Mediteranean in late March? I remember watching F1 in England in March.

around paul ricard way at the moment it's not much above freezing every night. during the day it's just above 10, and ok in the sun but chilly in the wind. same goes for barcelona, though since most of the teams are staffed by brits that should be short sleeves weather

Well, if they can race the Nordschleife in snowy conditions they should be able to race Imola too. That said, it wouldn't have been the first time that the starting round of VLN at the Nordschleife becomes canceled due to snow.
Maybe the Italians have some special tricks, who knows but usually a race cannot take place if there is snow or ice on the ground

The organisers had to do something to ensure at least one more meeting was held. It may not be perfect but it will have to do.

Couldn't they have chosen the Turkish Grand Prix race to close the Asian season and use Montmeló for the start of the European season?

Nothing new there then. Heikki Kovalainen and Scott Speed tested FR2.0's at Imola prior to the first ever GP2 race there in 2005! And 6 or 7 GP2 drivers tried out the Valencia street course in Spain in 2008 in Spanish F3 cars. Although on the same weekend, Mike Conway and Ho-Pin Tung decided to race together in the International GT Open race there and won it. Talk about buying an advantage before the meeting has even begun!

Filippi replaces James Jakes at Coloni for this weekend. It seems that Jakes is off to Indycar and will not do the Main Series with Coloni either.
