The Future of Players
Some more email correspondence, this time with Imperial Tobacco...
MacDaddy wrote: When does the Canadian government's outright ban on tobacco advertising take effect? Am I correct in assuming Nov.1? Specifically, will the CART Players/Forsythe team be able to sport Players livery for their final event of this season, at Fontana Calif (Nov.2)? Players will be sorely missed by the motorsport community, and thanks for everything that you've done over the years for Canadian drivers. Their reply: We are reviewing our legal options at this point. Being outside Canada, we may be able to run Team Player.ca without a T.V. or promotional support. But the final decision rests with our legal counsel, and we are reviewing everything now. So maybe there's still hope! |

Good work Macdaddy. They don't seem resigned and they seem keen to continue only the law is maybe stopping them.

So there's still hope. Tobacco companies are notorious for finding loopholes and governements are nutorious for taking an obscene amount of time to correct them.
If Players does leave, I hope Forsythe still chooses to support Canadian talent, eh? |

Players have indeed done a lot for racing. Without them, JV and Greg would never have showed their ability, and Tags and Pat wouldn't've got through. Plus, CART would be down by 2 more top cars, and Tracy may not have a top ride now.

Unless some unnamed Canadian sponsor, possibly a brewery, steps into back Forsythe???

From an interview earlier in the month with Carpentier, as he talks about Canadian sponsorship laws...
"The beer companies, there are also some laws that keeps them from sponsoring individual drivers, I don't know exactly what they are, but I know that's one of the reasons why they cannot sponsor teams. They can sponsor events but not teams." |

There's no reason I can see why they can't set up a shill operation in Mexico (say, British-American Sporting Promotions, or something similar) and funnel the sponsorship money through that company into the Forsythe team.

I was under the impression that Tracy signed last year knowing Players was gone after this year and Forsyth promised him he had other sponsors lined up for him and Carpentier.

At the time Forsythe was strongly hinting toward sponsors from Europe. I suppose that, if worse came to worse, he could plaster the cars with Indeck stickers! Something that I find interesting, something that I just now found out, is that Gerald is a part-owner of the team. So when Imperial Tobacco pulls out, not only will he losing his sponsorship, but also his partnership.
I can't foretell the future for Players, But I can foretell the future for myself... |

I thought I recall Molson Brewery sponsored Moore. However, their company logo was rather small so I don't know if the logo was actually Molson supported or something that was given to Molson for free??? Or was it just my poor memory?

The difference with this law is that the tobacco companies and the gov't worked together. The company was regulated in the least painfull way possible in exchange for their cooporation. If they do something underhanded they'll get a rather nasty response.

Molson sponsored Danny Sullivan in 1992 and was associate sponsor on Al Unser jr.s.
Greg Moore was a spokeman for Molson's "Take Care" anti drinking/driving program. |
