red lady should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Ferrari Racing Days - Silverstone June 2007

Hi. I am a novice photorapher. I seem to spend a lot of time at race tracks hence my main focus will be on motorsport - it looks like there a a lot of great photographers in the forum. I am using a Nikon D80 and my enthusiasm to get the most out of my camera has resulted in me participating in a one day course with Nikon on Thursday to find my way around the camera more comprehensively - in other words - get out of 'auto' mode.
I have been practicing in 'sports' mode and the results can be viewed at
http://suewhyte.fotopic.net
My last outing was last Friday at Silverstone - Ferrari Racing Days (testing). Fantastic.
Any tips on my photography would be greatly appreciated.

First thing I would say is that I can't see any EXIF/techie info on any pictures up there, so I'm flying blind, but...

I suspect you may be trying to pan at a LOW shutter speed? This takes a LOT of practice. You have to learn to place the car in the VF, and keep it in teh same place, or you ust get soft/blurred images.

The pit stuff looks OK, and the head on shots.
Get it off Programme of any kind, and onto Shutter Priority, or Aperture Priority, and set it either as fast as you want (1/60 is plenty slow enough to start with), or open the lens up as much as it will go. (f2.8/3.5/5.6, depends on the lens you have...).

Oh, and I'd also ask what ISO you are set to? I tend to run a minimum 200, and with my noisy old thing, I try not to go over 400.

Hope this helps?

Looking at them I don't think the shutter speed is too low (wheels appear mostly frozen) so I would suspect any softness is down to panning technique or a focus issue.

Do you go to the Long Itch Diner? I think it's fantastic.

I live in Cobham, Surrey. We sell High Octane Racing Fuel imported from America - the business is based in Southam. I was up there yesterday. Didn't have time for lunch at the Long Itch. I had been to the Formula 1 Test Day at Silverstone in the morning. Not half as exciting as the Ferrari event or the Brooklands Centenary or even the events at Santa Pod.
