ALMS 2013 Round 2: Long Beach

After finishing up a packed weekend of racing at Silverstone, it is time for the sportscar scene to shift back to the ALMS. Long Beach is always entertaining, and this year should be no different. Qualifying begins at 17:05 local time on Friday April 19, with the race (2 hours) running at 16:30. It is the shortest race on the ALMS schedule, and tends to get a bit dodgy with a lot of contact. Anything can happen! Don't forget to enter in the FRC for this round too!

arakis has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
After Sebring BoP http://www.imsaracing.net/2013/alms/...IN%2013-09.pdf

notable:
Corvette was given another 15kg now 1275kg (base 1245kg), and the fuel refueling restritor is now 2mm smaller now 36 instead of 38. (base 32)

Base are the values with no BoP applied as per the rules.

It is still very strange that Corvette needs a bigger refueling restrictor in order to fill their tank in the same time as the other GTE cars.

An explanation was given that the fuel lines leading to the tank are longer then on all the other competitors, where the fuel is loaded is farther away from the tank... I have no Idea why a larger restrictor is needed..

The race is in four days — any ideas as to who the TBD drivers are, especially for the two Level 5 cars?

Level 5's TBDs have been announced as Marino and Ryan Briscoe... and Level 5 have also announced that they're committing to the full season.

Interesting... I was thinking Tucker was finally going down the drain but obviously he's not giving up so easily. :/

Does anyone think Dyson could keep up with Rebellion and Muscle Milk?

Also, what about the TBD's for the #68 TRG and both the Flying Lizards?

Don't forget, we'll be doing a tweet up with Josef Newgarden and Bryan Herta Autosport in the IndyCar fan village on Saturday (ALMS race day) at 12:30pm.

Bryan and Wolf have a pretty light schedule for Friday, so if anyone wants to come by and say hello, I recommend Friday afternoon. As always, we welcome you to come check out the car and say hello.

They had to do something to let Ferrari keep up!

Go Corvette, Falken, Dyson & Muscle Milk!

yeah sure, they could give the same engine restrictor to Ferrari, and watch it lap the vette every 2 laps

I wonder how the Viper will handle the bumpy street circuits of Long Beach and Baltimore this year. That is really the car I'm watching out for.

Who can't like the snake?

One of the Vipers was out of commission after practice, but the other did take part in last year's race at Baltimore. Baltimore is the bumpier of the two, so I'm not particularly worried about how the snake copes with the Long Beach streets.

Sad but true, how the mighty have fallen. As I have said before, I wouldn't be surprised if they drop to P2 before the end of the season (with Zyteks?) to prep for next year.

I doubt there is that big of a discrepancy between the Vette and 458.

the 1.3mm increase in diameter is around a 9.5% increase in the surface area of the air intake, somewhat directly proportional to the horsepower increase, at the base hp of 465hp*1.095= 509.2 hp, which is a 44.2 hp increse.. I was off by a bit, I would still take a ~10% hp increase over a 2.5% weight decrease (30kg diff at 1245). this is not accounting that the vette has a 5.5l engine vs ferraris 4.5l, giving it a torque addvantige as well..

You don't know what the engines produce officially. All you have to go on is "team quotes". IIRC the 458 was the fastest GTE car on the straight last year at LeMans. If they're so down on power how is that achieved? Lower drag? A more efficient car? Obviously there's more to how the 458 gets on than it's restrictor size.

Whatever the case, the ALMS cars seem pretty closely matched right now. It should be a great race.
