..and Barry, Fernando was also very quick but a little weird at times? I have relayed this story before but can remember returning from Donington. We passed Fernando's truck at the side of the road, thought he had broken down so stopped. No sign of him until we looked in the back and he was sitting in the race car playing his flute! |

On the grid for a Sports/GT race in 1970. The Pink Stamps Racing Lotus 30 of John Markey. Not sure on the identity of the car alongside. Anyone?

I may be well wide of the mark, but it's not one of the Martin BM-series cars is it?

What about a Willment-BRM? Chevron on pole but no marks for that. Or is it? May have been a wet practice. Martins were a bit smarter than that weren't they, more of a wedge shape.

It is no Willment-BRM, which looks quite different from car no. 145.
Could it be the Lenham spyder? Last edited by klaus; 5 Feb 2003 at 17:42. |

Lenham! Of course - it's a Lenham P70.
Probably. Either that or the Ardua! |

Great mixed Sportscar grids in those days weren't they!
By the position of these cars (with the stewards enclosure in the background on the inside of Woodcote), I would say they are mid grid - meaning that some very fast cars are probably upfront such as Jeremy Lord's Minilite Astra which won the Motoring News Sports/GT Championship about this time and maybe Lola T70 / GT40 / Chevron B8's & 16's. Glorious days.. Jeremy now runs the F3 association - FOTA. |

The ex Markey Pink Stamps Lotus 30 now races in Vintage racing in Washington State USA.
What is the difference between a Lenham P69 and the Lenham P70?. No roof. Who raced the Ardua, and what does Ardua stand for. These threads are very interesting. |

At the risk of looking a complete idiot, I think the car in the middle is the Ardua. Lenhams had a roll hoop the full width of the cockpit when supplied and the rear body on the Ardua sat up a bit at the back. But ofcourse customers change things. We supplied Les Allyot (Spelling!!!) with a Lenham body for his chassis, on the basis of his RAF friendship with Julian Booty who designed the Lenham body and the fact that he was an 'all round good guy'.
Ardua was taken from the RAF motto Per Ardua Ad Astra. The difference between a P69 and P70 Lenham was mainly in the suspension, (beefed up), new uprights and axles, and different brakes. usual evolution really. |

And in case anyone is interested, the RAF motto Per Ardua ad Astra can be translated as "By our efforts, the stars."

Jeremy - here you are again! Chasing Jim Walsh's Van Diemen in 1974. Is that a Reynard you are driving?

Remember when Ronnie lost it at Becketts in a blizzard in the 1973 (or '74?) International Trophy? I was sitting at Woodcote - no snow or rain there and I remember the crowd laughing when the commentator announced that Ronnie had spun in a snow storm!

Nigel Mansell's 1977 Mckechnie Racing Formula Ford Crossle 32F, winner of the Silverstone based Brush Fusegear championship. He beat SDC sponsored Royale driver Trevor Van Rooyen to the title by a single point, decided on who got the fastest lap at the final round.I was 'gofer' on Trevor's car in those days..Nigel and Chico Serra were the big rivals!

How times change! The pits at the 1969 British GP meeting. Spectators could watch from above and the teams worked in cramped conditions on the raised pit road.
