Mitzi,

If it is that short notice it would surely have to be Taupo? Has there been any mention of this in the NZ general or motorsport media recently? Have heard of it earlier and the Sheik did visit NZ a while back, have not heard of anything recently though.

In support of Mitzi, this is the track in question:
http://www.tauporacetrack.co.nz/
MotoGP have also taken a great interest, as long as the "old" part of the circuit has improved run-off areas for the bikes.
All NZ needs now is a Government $12M (NZ) injection per annum for MotoGP.
As far as A1GP is concerned, the track is virtually ready. A commitment by the A1 guys will finish the pit buildings off and we will have a track of international standard - well ahead of the other International track which I believe has yet to get "Resource Consent" (a Kiwi phrase for "let everybody object and kill the project") finalised.
We shall wait and see...

Mitzi and Starter,

Well that's just '******* brilliant news! I'll fly back from Shanghai for it!

The bad old days (only about three years ago!) that the top single seater racing event in NZ was FFord now well and truely forgotten! Excellent!

The promoter of the Australian Superbike Championship has said on his website that A1 GP is not returning to Eastern Creek.Given that he is one of the major hirers of the circuit I would expect his information to be pretty accurate

If this is true I hope that they move it to Phillip Island. They would look great on a real racetrack

Given that Linfox is refusing to do the circuit upgrades required to keep Moto GP at the Island after 2007(the renewal contract between Dorna and the GP Corporation was due to be signed off 8 months ago and has not been) the massive costs of making the circuit reach safety standards for international open wheelers would appear to be out of the question.

Sorry for the typo-the Moto GP contract expires in 2006 not 2007.Woodbine I couldn't agree with you more about not wanting a street race.I'd prefer no race than to see my tax dollars wasted on a street race.

With A1 going to NZ surely a Australia-NZ double header would make sense. Here's hoping you still get something. Agree Philip Island would be awesome, but in Victoria close to the start of the F1 season (apparently NZ is in Feb)? Not sure about that one.

Apparently 10 of the 12 races are confirmed, but they will wait another couple of weeks to confirm the last two they are still negotiating and then release the calender. Hope it is announced soon, I am anxiously waiting...

Calendar should be announced sometime this month.
It also looks as though teams (e.g. DAMS, Carlin) will be limited to running a maximum of 2 franchises for the next season.

Indeed, and a good thing too. Despite what the Dams management like to say I think we all know that running 3 or 4 franchises is going to give you quite a advantage over teams that are running perhaps just 1 or 2. Good to see the A1 organisers are doing something about the situation though, hopefully we will have less domination by just 1 or 2 nations.

I think it was the best way to be fair play is to go for 2 franchises for each team

Will that be next season as in this coming season, or '07 - '08? If it's this one just seems pretty soon...

This coming season starting in October. It does seem a bit soon, but I'm guessing teams like Carlin and SuperNova are used to changing plans at the last minute with driver budgets falling through and the like.

some new rules announced today! looks good!

The extension of the Feature race from 60 minutes to 70 minutes.
The reduction of the Sprint race from 30 minutes to 20 minutes as well as a change in the points system, allocating points to the top six finishers only.
The points system and prize money for the Feature race will remain unchanged.
The time between the Sprint race and the Feature race will be increased to nearly three and a half hours allowing for scrutineering, the lodging of any protests and technical adjustments to the cars.

Another notable change for next year...

Sky Sports UK has agreed to allow a delayed race broadcast to be made available on terrestrial television.

Wonder who that could be with, Ch5 maybe?! Will be good for the series though. Very sensible changes so far lets hope A1 GP carries on from the success of last year

I hope the races have decent support packages alongside A1, otherwise those 3.5hrs could be very dull for any fans at the track.
