Radiator hose
you know the main hose that connects the radiator to the engine block on a saloon car, well if i disconnect it will that cause an airlock in the cooling ?
or is it safe just to disconnect it ? cheers. |

er... do you want to run the engine without any water circulating? The water is pumped up and out of the top of most engines to the top of the radiator via the top hose. It cools and retuns to the engine via the bottom hose. If you block off either hose no water will go to the radiator. The engine will overheat very quickly unless it is a very cold day.

I'm not sure *exactly* what is being asked here, but I know that with some cars, if you disconnect the top hose to flush the radiator or drain cooling system, then when you reconnect and refill with coolant, you do get an air lock and the system needs bleeding.
So if that was the question, the answer depends on the type of car/engine and the question might be best asked on a forum relating to that type of car - or maybe a web search will find the answer. Last edited by alfasud; 27 Jun 2003 at 07:06. |

i needed to remove the hose temporarily with the engine turned off - because it was in the way of the air filter i was fitting. I managed to do the job without disconnecting the hose though.

this was bizarre- any time you remove a radiator hose air will enter-like brake lines-
so run the engine with out the radiator cap a while and wathch bubles comeout, when enough bubles are out fill it up /top it off and recap the radiator. |

Some cars have bleed screws that need to be opened to let air pockets out of the head.
Read the Manual! Most cars will bleed air from the cap, but not all cars. Read the Manual! If you were fitting a pod air filter you will of course not need to read the Manual because you know it all anyway! |
