Hi pec1 and a very warm welcome to you!

Great account of your memories of the Capri which clearly had a significant race history.

Tiff did drive a mk2 in some European events in the late 70's, can't remember who with or who ran the car? This will certainly be a good area to investigate.

Let's see if anyone else here has any ideas.

Intrigued by the mention of Hewland internals for the Capri box mentioned in pec1's post. I didn't know that Hewland had done anything for Ford after the early 5 speed unit for the Anglia in the mid 60s.

Also, who is the grandson of Harold MacMillan in special saloons?

They did a close ratio, straight cut gear set for the 'Type 5' for use in Gp1.
Quaife later made this same set which a lot of us used in Road Saloons, ModProds etc.

I have been reading this thread off and on for years and there's lots of very interesting stuff in it but I have just realised that I don't actually know what the baseline specs of the cars were in Grp1 and GrpA trim. For the none expert like me, does such a thing exist please. It would be interesting as I could then put some of the other stuff in context. I don't even know whether the cars of this era were bolt in or welded cages; seam welded shells; drum brakes or discs at the rear; power output; adjustable suspension; 4 or 5 speed boxes etc etc. My apologies if this is dumb but it would be interesting to know what the basic specs for each set of regs were!

Mention of it here for Capri raced in several of the years:

Excellent! Thanks for sharing. Any of the car in its race life?
Mind you jumping like that in a Capri is seriously brave. Are you sure it's not Bodie n Doyle?!

Chap called Adam McMillan raced the ex-Brodie 3.4 Capri in SpecSaloons in the mid 70s, sharing with John Olding IIRC. This car wasn't a G1 or Prodsaloon though. I recall McMillan in a BMW 323 in Prodsaloons later on

It's unusual to see a Capri landing with the rear down. The cast iron V6 engines [Essex and Cologne] in the Capri were significantly heavier that the ally V8 in the Rover. Any time I went yumping my 2.8i Capri it felt like it would go end over end then front was down so fast.

Daveyboy you make a good point. The weight of the engine did make the back end very skittish particularly during braking and it would tend to land nose down. The reason it is tail down in the second pic is that it wasn't landing - it was still taking off. That stage is the Curraghs and the approach to those crossroads dips down so you hit the crossing road and the car bounces up. Making pacenotes at 15mph it seemed nothing, on the day it was more exciting.

When I bought the car research into it's history was a couple of phone calls and a rummage through old MN's where I did find some pics. Of course now we have the internet there is more information to be had so using wwwracingsportscars.com and checking the MacMillan family line I have found;
One of Harold MacMillan's grandsons was Hon Adam Julian Robert Macmillan born 1948. He is recorded as driving in 3 races in 1981 and 1982. 2 at Silverstone and 1 at Spa. 2 races in a Capri and 1 in a BMW. His co drivers were
Tom Dodd Noble
Hermes Delbar
Colin Davids
Michael Lavers
The fact that he had co drivers and the car had a long range tank indicated endurance races so checking the 1981 Silverstone Tourist Trophy (13/09/81) there he was! He finished 21st. The car was entered by Noble MacMillan Ltd.
I thought he may have come back to the TT in 1982, and he did but in a BMW so his other Capri race had to be Spa and it was actually pre dating the 1981 TT he raced in the Spa 24 Hours (26/07/81) but retired with gearbox failure. At Spa the car was entered by Holman Blackburn.
Now you guys have got me interested I'm going to try to trace it. I can follow it to 1989 then I think it was broken for spares. The shell was very good so there may be a chance it survives.
For now I have to add it to the list we all have of cars we once owned and regret selling!

The other possibility is that it was a brand new car as CC may have built as many as 25 cars, the latter ones mostly sold into Europe?
The car in question was not the Faberge/Stuart Graham car or the Wayne Wainright Capri. I, Terry Nicholls bought the car from Wainright. I raced the car at the Donnington 500 race in 1983 (hit the redgate wall) It was sprinted by me for a while and then it became THE GARTRAC CAPRI Fitted with the Cosworth GAA engine. Special Saloons and then Thundersaloons in 1985 onwards.

Hi Terry, warm welcome!

Thanks for confirming how you came by your Capri. I've got a pic of it in GAA spec taken at Thruxton in 1984. Helluva car!.

Wainwright was an interesting character so I heard! He bought it from Stu Graham but only did a part season in 1981 before you acquired it

I don't think it did anything at all in '82?

Clearing some old files out of my parents garage recently I stumbled across a couple of old pics of Capris. These include the CC built Woodman and Spice cars that Brian Chatfield bought, taken in the BTCC Paddocks sometime in 1985 or '86 I think. I will scan and post asap.

Pete Winstone brought one off of Chatfield, I don't know what happened to it afterwards but I am in touch with Pete as funnily enough he phoned me up only the other day asking me what diff ratio he needs for Brands in an Escort BDA he has just finished!

That's right, thanks Gordon, he had the Woodman Esso car. It passed through several hands but it's now back in original spec and colours, but yet to be driven in anger.

I think Dave Thomas might have taken the Spice car off of Chatfield before modifying it but not sure who Dave sold it onto a few years ago.

This is my 1st post so hopefully it will work, my friend Roger Hancock rallied a Capri which I am sure is the mystery you are talking car you are talking about. If memory serves me correctly he converted it to a GPA spec 2.8i but only did a couple of tarmac events ,probably Belgium and then sold it on .In those days I worked in the parts dept at Ford main dealer Curries and I used to supply Gartracs with lots of parts and can well remember sprinting my escort at G/wood when Terry Nicholls machine was in action, just a little bit quicker than me!
If you want I could contact Roger for more info?

Hi rainbow, thanks for posting and warm welcome.

Yes it would be great if Roger can shed a bit of light on the history of the car as presumably the seller (whether it was Andy Rouse, or whoever) would have also provided documentation in what it had done up to the point Roger purchased it and it would also be good to know what happened to it after his ownership.

That will be the yellow 'Metro Breakers' car, seen here in my video, also has the Peter Winstone car (in silver) that Gordon mentioned a couple of posts back...

2 shots I took of (then) Brian Chatfield owned cars in 1985 at Silverstone (I think...)

They are clearly the ex Woodman Equipe Esso car from 1982 and the other is a rare shot of the ex Gordon Spice car. I originally felt that the red car was a late G1 model possibly from 1982?

It has the 1982 style shell stickers on the side, but it appears that the lettering has been hand applied. The number 10 has been placed over whatever number was on it before.

I also have a theory that this may in fact be a car that went out to Macau....

It is also sporting reasonable contact damage at the rear, but that could be from modsalooon action.

Still, this is highly likely the car that David Thomas then bought and modified significantly...

Anyone else able to shed any light?

I have at last heard from Roger Hancock, he,s in Antigua building a house as you do, he remembers buying the car from Andy Rouse as a rolling chassis, purchased a brand new 2.8 engine and fitted it with Oselli modified heads and cam. and entered as a gp1 car. The best thing he remembers about it was the glorious noise it made, the worst was its size and lack of power steering meant it almost impossible to steer at low speed on rally tyres. He only did a couple of events in it and sold it on to a northerner who wanted to develop it into a tarmac car.Unfortunately he can,t recall his name.
Hope this helps, anymore specific questions I will gladly pass on.
