Any experiences/suggestions for in-car cameras?

Hi all,

Having received a swanky new camcorder for Xmas last year, and already having tried taking for in-car footage, with a camera mounted to the rollcage at PAu a couple of years ago, I have been looking at going the 'next step' and stumping up for one of the in-car bullet cam-based systems.

Does anyone on here have any experience of any of these systems, or advice on what to look out for/avoid?

So far, have looed at the one Demon Tweeks sell, and the Goldstar Racecam system, both around 500 quid...

Any advice gratefully received!

Regards,

James W

Have a look at http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/cameras.htm - you can fit a bullet cam to your existing setup if you have the right inputs on the camera.

Thanks, guys.

Have ordered a bullet cam kit from rf concepts. At 1/3rd price of the goldstar one it's got to be worth a try!

Regards,

James

I used a small bullet camera connected to a Sony camcorder and the results were quite good. The camera itself ony cost about £50 a few years ago in Singapore.

On a similar theme, does anyone have any ideas for mounting? A chap in our series rigged up a bullet cam on the roll hoop. However, the standard mounting (a soft casting ball joint on the rear end) was nowhere near man enough - not only did it fail in a couple of laps but vibration caused a problem with picture quality.

My thoughts were a rubber-lined P-clip in the middle of the camera. However engine vibration (as well as fairly stiff suspension) mean a lot of vibration. Someone suggested some form of gel-pack to isolate high frequencies. I've browsed the recommended sites but can't see anything remotely appropriate. Ideas?

Can't remember what I used, but it was nothing elaborate. I think I just wrapped a small piece of rubber round it then taped or ty-rapped it straight to the roll hoop. A bit of clingfilm over the lens too, so it doesn't get knackered if there's any oil flying about. Don't forget to isolate the recorder from vibrations too - they're normally more sensitive than the camera.
