Dream F1 Calendar
I was recentley talking to some friends and we got onto the topic of a dream F1 calendar. This could inclued any circuit past or present.
We only did a few but : the usual suspects of Monza and Spa were there. Do any of you have any circuits that you would want onto the calendar? Sorry if this has been a previous post i don't get much chance to post. |

There have been multiple threads on this, but it's a good one to have a new one on.
Being sensible on length, appropriate venues and licencing, and in no order of quality. Round 1 - UAE Grand Prix : Abu Dhabi (It's better than Bahrain) Round 2 - Turkish Grand Prix : Istanbul (Tilke's best permenant track) Round 3 - Portugese Grand Prix : Portimao (the new one) Round 4 - Spanish Grand Prix : Valencia (It's not that good but what's the alternative?) Round 5 - Monaco Grand Prix : Monaco Round 6 - French Grand Prix : Paris (a good car park track at Eurodisney or a street circuit) Round 7 - Canadian Grand Prix : Ile De Notre Dame Round 8 - Indianapolis Grand Prix : Indianapolis Round 9 - Italian Grand Prix : Monza Round 10 - German Grand Prix : No idea Round 11 - Belgian Grand Prix : Spa Round 12 - British Grand Prix : Silverstone or Donington Round 13 - Finnish Grand Prix : Helsinki street circuit Round 14 - Japanese Grand Prix : Suzuka Round 15 - Pacific Grand Prix : Motegi Round 16 - Singapore Grand Prix : Singapore (Night race, it's actually a nice track) Round 17 - Atlantic Grand Prix : Somewhere in Florida (for the weather) Round 18 - USA Grand Prix : Las Vegas Existing venues new to F1 (for at least a while) in italic, bold needs creating. I've probably made a glaring omission somewhere though

Deliberate exclusion due to no track of adequate quality and travel costs, it's also not that much of a major market.

I have gone for a more realistic approach rather than putting in the usual nordschleife, osterreichring favourites.
Round 1 : Sao Paulo, Brazil Round 2 : Melbourne, Australia Round 3 : Sepang, Malayasia Round 4 : Imola, San Marino Round 5 : Jerez, Spain Round 6 : Estoril, Portugal Round 7 : Monaco, Monte Carlo Round 8 : German, Nurburgring Round 9 : Montreal, Canada Round 10 : Long beach, USA Round 11 : Silverstone, UK Round 12 : Magny Cours, France Round 13 : Istanbul, Turkey Round 14 : Monza, Italy Round 15 : Spa Francorchamps, Belgium Round 16 : Mexico, Mexico City Round 17 : Marina Bay, Singapore Round 18 : Suzuka, Japan |

1) Australian GP - Adelaide Night Race 2) Malaysian GP - Sepang 3) Indian GP - Delhi (permanent road course of some sort) 4) Spanish GP - Aragon 5) Monaco GP - Monaco 6) European GP - Donington 7) German GP - Nurburgring 8) Canadian GP - Montreal 9) US GP - Indianapolis (MotoGP track with Speedway T1) 10) French GP - Le Mans Bugatti 11) British GP - Silverstone 12) Hungarian GP - Hungaroring 13) Scandinavian GP - Gotlandring (track in the vein of [and about the same length as] Spa on an island in the gulf between Sweden and Finland) 14) Belgian GP - Spa 15) Italian GP - Monza 16) Sinagapore GP - Marina Bay Night Race 17) Japanese GP - Suzuka 18) Chinese GP - Shanghai 19) Portugeuse GP - Portimao 20) Brazilian GP - Interlagos I have included China and India as they are important markets for carmakers. Malaysia is there because I like the track, before the aero got silly it produced some good racing. Singapore is there because I like it as well. |

I'm waiting for them to turn 130R into 176.3R, or something horrible like that, in future years.
Anyway, as for the subject at hand, I have tried to keep things within some semblance of vague sanity (like not naming the Nord, or what have you). I have, however, taken the dream concept to mean I have included things which truly have no possibility in the realities of the world. 1) Interlagos 2) That-New-Argentinian-One-That-Looks-Rather-Cool 3) Mexico (I'm torn which track, but there should be a race there) 4) Indianapolis Motor Speedway (oval track: possibly opposite direction) 5) Turkey 6) Valencia 7) Lausitzring (the road course thingy bit - not sure what the configuration is termed!) 8) Silverstone 9) Monza 10) Spa 11) Le Mans 12) Monte-Carlo* 12) Mt. Tremblant 13) Mosport 14) Elkhart Lake/Watkins Glen (rotational) 15) Kyalami 16) Russian GP (preferably eastern Russia somewhere) 17) Singapore 18) Macau 19) Suzuka 20) Bathurst *The pre-1994 configuration Last edited by Dutton; 6 Dec 2008 at 21:14. |

Several reasons for that
1) Good TV times for Europe, especially Las Vegas. A 12 noon start on Vegas would be an 8pm start in London, 9pm in Central Europe Time and 2pm in New York. 2) It's a large potential market for the manufacturers. 3) It would help to get the US manufacturers in. |

Here's my dream 2009 calendar, broken up into segments with dates and my reasons for putting them on the calendar included.
Oceania Tour: Round 1 - March 29 - Melbourne, Australia The traditional F1 season opener. Round 2 - April 5 - Sepang, Malaysia Not really one of my favorites, I'll admit it's mostly there to make Melbourne more viable. European Tour Pt. I: Round 3 - April 19 - Istanbul, Turkey Easily Tilke's best circuit. Round 4 - May 3 - Imola, Italy (San Marino GP) The circuit's been redesigned recently to lure F1 back, and they've taken out the last chicane so there's a longer full-throttle run to Tamburello. Round 5 - May 10 - Monte Carlo, Monaco One of the jewels of the F1 calendar. Round 6 - May 17 - Le Mans Bugatti, France Makes sense after Monaco, and we need a decent French circuit to use instead of Magny-Cours. Round 7 - May 31 - Nurburgring, Germany After Hockenheim got murdered, this is one of the few suitable German tracks left to hold the race. Round 8 - June 7 - Silverstone/Donington, Britain Silverstone would hold the GP until Donington finishes their redevelopment, then they rotate each year. Round 9 - June 21 - Portimao, Portugal Absolute rollercoaster of a circuit, very much like Istanbul. North America Tour: Round 10 - July 12 - Montreal, Canada Excellent circuit that provides good racing every year. Round 11 - July 19 - Indianapolis, USA Personally I would have liked Laguna Seca, but that's too short. Indianapolis is great too, though. Asian Tour: Round 12 - August 9 - Suzuka/Fuji, Japan This is the same situation that exists with the current calendar, with Suzuka and Fuji trading the GP each year. Round 13 - August 22 - Marina Bay, Singapore (Night) Fantastic street circuit and rivals Monaco in terms of glamour. European Tour Pt. II Round 14 - September 13 - Monza, Italy Round 15 - September 20 - Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium Does anything need to be said to justify either of these? Central/South American Tour: Round 16 - October 4 - Mexico City, Mexico This might be disqualified for being too short, since the lap record in '91 is already less than 7 seconds away from the minimum, but I think F1 needs to return to Mexico. Round 17 - October 18 - Potrero de los Funes, Argentina For those of you who don't know, this is a semi-permanent circuit around a volcanic lake that has already hosted an FIA GT race. Absolutely beautiful scenery, and I'm fairly sure all it needs to host F1 is upgrading the facilities. Round 18 - October 25 - Interlagos, Brazil Just as with Melbourne, this is the traditional season closer. |

I'd love to make a totally unrealistic list that includes the Nordschliefe and Bathurst, but I tried to keep it semi realistic.

Canadia Grand Prix - Mosport 7. Mexican Grand Prix - Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez 8. US Grand Prix - Road America 9. Portuguese Grand Prix - Portimao 10. French Grand Prix - Paul Ricard 11. British Grand Prix - Silverstone 12. Dutch Grand Prix - Zandvoort 13. Austrian Grand Prix - A1 Ring 14. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa 15. Italian Grand Prix - Monza 16. Indian Grand Prix - Wherever the choose to build it. 17. Chinese Grand Prix - Shanghai 18. Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka 19. Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos I left off Sepang, Bahraain, Valencia, and Singapore becuase those circuits are quite boring and awful. I didn't put in a German Grand Prix because they'll never hold one on the Nordschliefe again, and the Hock has been neutered, so there is no point. |

The A1 Ring does not exist anymore, as I recall.
I would suggest moving Mosport a bit later in the year. Yes, winter would be basically over by then (with generally warm weather usual), but you never know quite what might happen. The way I see it, that spot would put the race mid-may: whilst the weather should be clear by then, it wouldn't be totally out of the question for a final attempt at winter. Just a thought. |
