Computer-generated banners in F1
Floks, have you noticed those computer-generated banners that have appeared in F1, GP2 and GP3 broadcasts?
The most obvious one was at the Chinese Grand Prix. The grandstands at the corner before the backstretch were hidden in some cases by a huge Fly Emirates ad. Now in Spain, in the inside of turn 5 there's a huge Rolex ad painted on the grass. When they switch to the next camera, there's just grass. I think that it's ridiculous. There's plenty of banners already in front of every camera. |

Do you recall the huge advertising banners they used to have at tracks in the 80s and 90s?
I remember them specifically at places like Monza https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lfa9iOo-to Anyone know why these massive advert signs aren't used any more? |

At Silverstone last year I had an interesting chat with an FOM camera operator. They pointed out that where we were standing would have a giant banner overlaid - and they've done it for years.

Think about. A sign on a wall at the side of the track is painted on and is
there for the entire GP weekend. A digital advert superimposed onto the grass can change lap to lap or half way through a GP for example. I am sure with the technology they have these days they could even have a different company logo for the telecasts in each country??? Basically this all means they can charge the same price a couple of times over for the same piece of real-estate.....you can't do that for a permanent painted wall!!!! This is the reason you see blank green painted walls at some GP tracks. |

I think I spotted this watching Monte Carlo one year. It annoyed me there because that place is picturesque and I want as faithful representation as possible of picturesque venues delivered to my screen.
It doesn't faze me anywhere else as from the TV screen most other tracks are broadly similar to each other and are not particularly picturesque. I've also seen this in soccer and rugby games. |

They've been doing it since the early 2000's. It is not a new thing to F1, or other sports.

Well the problem is that once all that electronic overlay is gone the circuit looks bland for the fans and that is a shame

They have been doing them in V8SC for a while too. Although they also have been doing ones with fake overhead gantry/spectator bridges which look pretty bad. Given that it is generally shown in Standard Def throughout most of Australia most of it is generally unreadable if they decide to do anything marginally more than simple.

Frustrating thing is though if its wet, the spray from the cars "block" the image, just looks really bad.

I have the mute button mastered - although F1 race action is unfettered by breaks since its liberation from ITV, thankfully.
As for the banners, I wonder is there some sort of Adblock device you can get? Last edited by Paradise City; 12 May 2014 at 15:43. |

How long before variable adverts on each car? Are there any territories that still allow cigarette advertising - could we see the McLaren Hondas carrying full Marlboro colours if you watch in the Far East and silver for viewers in the UK?
