Lydden

Does anyone know what is happening to lydden, the lease runs out on november 23rd and i dont think the bmcrc are intrested in renewing the lease - they have no events schedualed for 08.

Autosport have reported in the last few weeks that BARC, BRSCC and a private indiviudal have an interest in taking over the lease; MSV on the other hand do not. I don't know whether anything has progressed beyond these stories.

There are provisional dates for events at Lydden next year, I fully expect the lease to be picked up (I believe the general rule of thumb is that as long as the circuit is making money it'll stay open).

My understanding of the situation is that Mclaren are trying to sell the venue/land, the major problem with the circuit is the 52 days a year restriction which wouldn't make it commercially viable to MSV or others.

I know more than I can say (for once!) but it's future should be resolved this week.

I love the place and look forward to getting back there next year.

Hope it does stay open, it's the only photographer friendly track in the South of England

Also, it has the best tuck shop of any racetrack I've been to.

Agreed. Gail's is the best breakfast at any circuit full stop. But that's a different argument and one I'm sure has been done!

So yes, Lydden.... superb place. Can we get BTCC there next year please?

Great.

Thanks.

Look forward to it.

(P.S. I know they can't!)

NO NO NO! They would spoil a great circuit.

Mind you, you could always send them round the rallycross circuit as they seem to spend most of their time off the black stuff.

Great memories of Lydden. First started marshalling there in the mid 70's, back when rallycross was shown live on Grandstand. Bill Chessun used to run/own it then. I don't get down there much these days, too much to do here in the Midlands, but lets hope the circuit continues to run meetings.

Jon - As one of the (very) loyal Lydden marshals can I say I'm sure we are all keeping our fingers crossed for good news. The place is just unique (with due apologies to other circuits!) in terms of its layout, views of the track, its catering... but most of all its people (be they marshals, spectators, competitors, photographers - everyone!). I would like to think we all look on each other as friends at Lydden - ones that enjoy the pleasures of true motor sport. Perhaps what we need is a true philanthropist to take over and run the circuit just for the sheer joy of it.

Well put. I always enjoy my trips to Lydden to see you lot. Even if I'm greeted with a warm chorus of abuse.

I've always been given to understand that, historically, the lease was only on a year by year basis, which accounts for the limited investment in the circuit. I'm sure somebody will tell me if I'm wrong but it's still a great little circuit - great bunch of people - and long may it continue.
