SCV8

One for our longer-term readers I think.

Interesting ad on p36 of this week's Autosport. The entire SCV8 package is for sale - Jaguar X-Type demo car, spares, engines, CAD design, tooling, championship regs, the lot.

For those of you who don't remember, SCV8 was a proposed race formula developed by Andy Rouse. It used a RWD spec chassis with a production steel body powered by a V8 engine.

First seen briefly in 2000 with a Peugeot 406, it then re-appeared in a new form in 2004 with a Jag X-Type. The (proposed) series was put on hold for a year but never seen again.

Ah, yes, SCV8, or was it not V8SC? I was always looking foward to this championship, but unfortunately, never actually started. Intresting ad, me thinks the forum should buy it..

It was SCV8. Its a pity the competition never took off; from memory I seem to remember a number of reasons, one (perhaps unsuprisingly) was the running costs of such a car and I seem to remember reading in Autosport a couple of years back that there were difficulties in securing enough dates for a series. It'll be interesting to see whether anyone purchases the project and makes a success of it.

Let's hope someone buys the demo car and takes it to Britcar rather than harming the current touring car situation by starting ANOTHER series ...

The advert does say that the Jaguar could be sold seperately so someone racing it in likes of Britcar is a possibility. However, I would imagine such a scenario would be dependent on the costs of the car and its performance relative to a Porsche, Ferrari, etc. As for someone starting another series in Britain; I would be surprised. Ultimately, Andy Rouse and Peter Hall were unable to start racing their project and Jonathan Palmer was unable to get a similar concept off the ground. That said, the project could be sold to a region without many established motor racing competitons.

That's the point - it would harm the BTCC in the short run. Touring car racing has too many series in existance for its own good and it would be barking mad to start a new series pretty much anywhere, but some people in the world aren't just Barking, they're Upminster.

As I recall it was originally V8 Supercars (V8SC) until the Aussies complained and it became SCV8.

Hadn't thought about that until now but actually it would make a suitable replacement for the current DTM. If it wasn't for the new NASCAR-like Speedcar series I could see it working it working in the Middle East as well. It was never viable as a UK series then and still isn't now.

That was exactly my thoughts when I saw the ad. It's claimed the Jaguar is comparable to GT3 lap times and there seems to be a lot of people in Britcar with money to spend.

supertouring should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I have a small collection of items from this proposed series inc several car reviews in CCC mag, some autosport items plus a series brochure I manged to buy of ebay a few years ago.

I seem to recall it was a "silhouette" series with identical chassis and engines but wrapped in what looked like production bodyshells. The Rouse concept was to design the chassis so that it would be easy to fit the shell from a range of manufacturers four door saloons.

Engine was originally a Lotus badged item but when the jag was shown at Autosport show it was supporting a Nicolson Mclaren item.

There is also a small film of Justin Wilson driving the jag here

Definatly cool looking and sounding car, but for entertainment, i doubt it would have challenged the BTCC.

Hope someone does buy it up and use it next year, a good looking car, and there's just not enough Jaguars racing at the moment.
