They do now, gomick, in the IRL. I am not sure how far back that became common.
I do not believe they had them (or had many of them) back when CART was still CART.
I also do not believe they have them in CC due to the predominance of road/street courses where you would have to have multiple spotters to cover the entire track visually.
Agreed Tony! the only thing that has changed over the years for PT is who he is hitting...

Champcars in any trim were beautiful back then (except for the hideous Penske's of that year).
