Bye Bye Carl A. Haas

Champ Car team co-owner Carl Haas plans to take his multiple title-winning team to the rival IndyCar Series in 2009 if a merger between the two championships cannot be agreed before then.

Well, what can you say. I understand Haas, because NHL have been a very, very big fish in a small pond the last few years so to say. If a merger is not done for 2009, this surely will end any real struggle between the two series. Champ Car might limp on a while, but it would be nothing compared to the IRL. And as you know, when one goes...

If Haas goes I'm sure it really would end things for CC. Plus poor, Paul Newman is battling cancer and is sure to retire..things don't look good...

IMO Haas knows more than he's letting one. I don't think he's on the sidelines just taking part. I'll put good money that he's involved in all the negotiation processes.

If not involved at least keep appraised. Keep in mind Newman and Lanigan as well.

I'd heard earlier in the year Newman was going to retire, well before this cancer story.
Regarding Haas, it seems that autosport is just quoting Robin Miller's recent piece... so, nothing new here.

Well if they don't get a merger done and Haas jumps atleast that will pretty much force it to happen and fans of the CART days can begin to dream again

Newman Haas raced at the front with the likes of Andretti/Green and Penske in the glory days of CART. I don't think it will be too much trouble for them to adapt to the IRL.
Don't forget Penske were the ones that were struggling to perform before they left for the IRL

They left for the IRL after winning the CART title the two previous seasons (won in 2000 & 2001, went to IRL in 2002). Though i'll concede 1998 & 1999 weren't so rosy.

If NHL goes so does the series as it stands. I don't see the owners footing the bill for more cars and I can't imagine the existing teams will necessary get 3rd cars (possible though) but I do think it'll be game over if NHL jumps

well i don't know about a hoax or not... but SpeedTv.com has posted the story
TG wins the Monopoly game of open wheel racing they say.
NHL goes to the IRL- whats left? Stoddart? and PKV racing? Champcar is breathing its last breath- with last minute cancellations and a rough schedule what can they do.
Champ car was turning into a Worls series powered by cosworth in a Nissan/renault world series kinda way- not bad racing but small fry type stuff.
this can only help open wheel
now with new cars coming in 09 maybe they'll stick with ethanol turbos and a decent MIX of chassis instead of a spec.
if champcar is dead and CART is dead and IRL won't be as it was
well long live North American OPen Wheel World Series what ever it will be reborn as
this can only be good. one guy in control as sucky as it is, look what global power Bernie is...

it was champ car (indy car at the time) that was there first. the IRL wth newman haas will be a boost, but i dont see how its going to lift the IRL back into a series thats going to be sucessful.
