Very Cool and I do hope this new Bimmer works out for the company, racing and customers.

That old Bimmer was a 5 liter V8 and had Hans Stuch ( sp?) as a driver on the window. Think it was a one of a kind or one of very few.

That BMW was an E46 M3 with a 4.0 M5 derived motor in it making around 450 hp. It was run by Schnitzer Motorsport in the 2001 season, the cars were then run in the N24 in 03 before winning overall in 05 and 06 with Stuck, Lamy, Muller, Muller and Boris Said. Was a great car, even if it was a a tweak of the rules before pulling out, since 10 were ever made and few actually were released for public sale, supposedly offered to preferred customers. I believe they have now been fully retired from racing after coming in 1-2 in consecutive N24s.

You're thinking of the 4 litre factory-built M3 GTR, the very car I was referring to. That car was run by Schnitzer Motorsport and PTG Motorsoprt in the ALMS, and later by Schnitzer at Spa and Nurburgring for the 24 Hours after it was barred from ACO-sanctioned competition at the end of the 2001 season. There was a 5 litre car which used a V8 derived from the M5 and was run in GARRA by Bell Motorsport (though several other unofficial versions of this car/engine combo were built and run around the globe). The cars were very different in terms of quality of construction, and only the official 4 litre car really ran a pure race block (which was the reason for its eventual downfall).

AU N EGL, Hans Stuck was a pilot for PTG in 2001 and drove one of their M3 GTRs along with Auberlen, Said and Jonsson, while Muller, Muller, Ekblom and Lehto piloted the 2 Schnitzer cars.

They were, although there are still a few "homebuilt" V8 M3 around, like http://www.scheid-motorsport.de/eifelblitz.htm

Again, not using the same block as the official GTR.

Yes that is the car.

We had an open track day several years ago at VIR. The current car owner brought that car down. It was blazing fast in the straights, but a handfull in for corners for the owner / driver, Too little rear end wt. with too much HP and no ABS.

YES I would love to see a new M3 GT2 race car along those lines.

I know, they never sold them to privateers.

Though I do think their engine is based on the same production block as the race engine, but that's where the similarities end.

I don't think it was the BMW Motorsports car then, because BMW never gave them away as far as I know. There is no "current owner" other than BMW for all of the true M3 GTR as prepared by BMW/Schnitzer/PTG. Additionally, they were renowned for being comparably forgiving and surefooted drives.

Then it wasnt the M3 GTR. This car is sitting in someones garage race shop in the in VA or NC. This car was not surefooted that is for sure.

Were any of their Group 5 cars V8-powered, or did BMW have a GTO car perhaps?

After watching that video (from the opening post) a few times, aside from GT2, I'm definitely thinking DTM as I look at the car.

GR5 CSL 'Batmobiles' were straight 6, the later 320's used a 1.4 turbo, they all raced in IMSA and at LM.
That also doesn't remind me of a DTM car I'm afraid.
