Some of the Oulton guys may remember Richard Ward and his Lotus Elan a few years ago. Well I was saddened to read that Richard died recently. My abiding memory of him is from a training day.
We used to run mock race meetings and some of the local drivers would drive their roadcars and fake racing incidents. Being drivers they couldn't be trusted to remember what they were meant to do so some of us sat in and read the script for them. I was lucky enough to be sat with Richard. He came blasting down Hilltop and was to turn into Fosters the wrong way, which is very tight. There were two cars ahead of us. Richard shot between them about 150 meters from the corner, then braked hard and turned in. He was so calm about it all and chatting. That's when I realised the difference between someone who thought he was quickish (me) and a decent racing driver.
Rest in peace, Richard.
