Indy 500 Starting at Original Time ?

Well, it appears that talks have been opened about having the Indianapolis 500 starting at 11:00 AM instead of 1:00PM. 11:00 AM was the original time the race started for years. This time gave NASCAR drivers the option to run both this race and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same day.

Owners and personnel of IndyCar teams have brought this idea up in a meeting.
Here is an excerpt of an article..

JOLIET, Ill. -- The Indianapolis 500 will return to its more traditional start time -- 11 a.m. -- if some influential IndyCar Series team owners have a say in it.The leaders of Team Penske and Andretti Green Racing said Saturday they support a change back to the earlier start time to help the event attract NASCAR drivers, which they figure would boost television ratings for the 500.
Currently, the 1 p.m. start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway does not allow enough time for drivers to complete the 500 miles and then fly to Concord, N.C., for the Sprint Cup Series night race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Team Penske president Tim Cindric brought the subject up in an owners meeting held with Indy Racing League officials prior to the race at Chicagoland Speedway.
"It's worth one (ratings) point, at least," Cindric said after the meeting.
Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon and John Andretti have competed in both races on the same day, Gordon the last in 2004. It was the fifth time Gordon had competed in both races.

I think this would be great. Be interesting to see who would all give it a go. I guarantee Sam Hornish Jr. would be doing it.

I don't really follow NASCAR, is AJ Allmendinger still racing there?
I'd like to see him at Indy. Scott Speed and JP Montoya would be great too.

Yes, AJ is still in NASCAR. He has a full time ride again in 2010. Scott Speed and Juan Montoya are both in NASCAR as well.

Yay, another thing to help people only care about the 500, and not the rest of the series. If people are only watching to see the NASCAR drivers, what's the point? We need our own stars, who people can see all-year long, instead of just being NASCAR without fenders one Sunday a year, and a virtual nothing the rest.

But if Dario Franchitti and Graham Rahal lay the switch to NASCAR guys in Ganassi and Penske rides, IndyCar looks all the better.

this is 11am EST right? i'm always confused with "Indiana" time.

i'd like to see some people be able to do the double as i've always like "crossover" drivers. i can see JPM trying again and maybe if Sam H. could convince the Capt to let him go back. Robby Gordon and Tony Stewart would have to convince their owners as well.

He could always sit on top of it. Bit of reinforcing of the suspension here and there...

This'd be a good move, IMO. I am sure you'd get at least one or two Cup drivers giving it a go (possibly more), which could only be a good thing in my view. It would attract more attention, which, frankly, is needed to be gained any which way.

The IRL ain't in a position to be picky about such things. If popular drivers from a vastly more popular branch of motorsport can provide more attention to the IRL/500, then it simply has to be tried to be achieved. Moving the start time is certainly one way to try and encourage it.
