Ukyo Katayama -missing on Mt Fuji
Quote:
SHIZUOKA —
A police rescue team rushed to Mt Fuji on Friday after receiving a call seeking help for a party of three climbers, including former Formula One racing driver Ukyo Katayama. Shizuoka prefectural police said they received the call at around 7:30 a.m. from Katayama, who told them that one of his party ‘‘appeared to have died and another was in danger (of dying).’‘
He called police this morning to ask for help, saying one companion had died and the other was ill after their tent blew away, the report said. Police are still trying to locate Katayama, Yomiuri said.
Temperatures on the mountain fell as low as -27 degrees Celsius (-17 F) overnight, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Web site.
The party began their climb Thursday, according to the police. Katayama, 46, drove in the Formula One World Championship series from 1992-1997 before shifting the focus of his racing career to rallying. He is also known as an avid climber, having scaled such peaks of Mt Manaslu in the Himalayas and Mt McKinley in Alaska.

I hope and pray they find him. Sorry about the man who died.
IMO Ukyo Katayama was the best Japanese F1 driver ever.

Unless you continued looking after you found him, which would be silly.
Glad he's okay. Sorry to the two less fortunate.

Glad he's ok. My favourite memory of him is when he was on the clive james f1 show (the night before the season opener in Aus) that was on ITV, and he was clearly not paying attention watching an off screen monitor as they were filming.

glad to hear he's ok. Must have been some horrific weather then as i dont think Fuji is regarded as one of the more difficult climbs. I've been 75% up it in shorts and trainers!!

I think the fact that he is a fit athlete and may have contributed to his survival. Glad to hear he is fine. It should be a wonderful Christmas for him

Sorry to the families of those less fortunate - RIP.
Lucky for Ukyo though, he's about to have his best new year ever I think.
I always have special memories of Katayama, he was my favourite driver when I first started watching F1 (along with JJ Lehto).
I thought that the name JJ Lehto just sounded cool, but Ukyo was the first person who I knew absolutely was from another country. It sounds weird I know, but Alain Prost and JJ Lehto (in my 8 year old brain) sounded like they could be English, but Ukyo Katayama is about as far from an English name as possible, so I always liked him.
Glad to hear he's survived to climb another day

As a Climber, and race fan, I'm so happy for Ukyo, so long as he has all the requisite bits still attatched. That sounds like it was a bit cold, -27 and winds strong enough to take a tent is NO fun...
So sorry for the other folks families though.
As to the guy who climbs mountains in shorts? You sound like people I've met in The Lakes before now. Heading up with kids in tow, in shorts, seeing fully kitted hill walkers bailing out, as it's so cold at height. Mountains need to be taken seriously, they bite.
