1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship

Dunlop had the option of extending their sponsorship for a third season, but the demands of the RAC was too high as they wanted to promote the championship to a new leavel. Esso would thus be the new title sponsor in a year that would see capacity grids and tv coverage surpassing everything seen so far.

Class A (Over 3000 cc)
A whole string of potent Ford Sierras was lined up to tackle the upper class of this years championship, making for one of the toughest series of 1989. Defending champion Andy Rouse was back in a brand new car, still in Kaliber colours, with Guy Edwards in similar colors in his 1988 car. Laurence Bristow and Tim Harvey were the instigators of a new high profiled Labatt’s sponsored team running customer Andy Rouse cars. Bristow’s mount was his previous car while Harvey had a brand new one to his disposal.
Like Rouse Graham Goode would be in his third season with the Sierra RS500 Cosworth entering three cars – two Listerine sponsored cars for himself and Mike Newman, while single seater and prototype convert Sean Walker would drive a Goodyear supported third entry. Terry Drury might have lost the talent of Tim Harvey, but upped his entry from one to three Sierras with two brand new cars. Former Holden man Mike O’Brien with BTCC newcomers Robin Donovan and David Pinkney were the drivers on pay-and-drive basis. Chris Hodgetts, Jerry Mahony and Karl Jones would reappear with their regular cars from Brooklyn, Roger Dowson and Richard Asquith, while David Brodie was comtemplating a full season with his late 1988 car, while Graham Hathaway would stick to a more limited programme.
Three new BTCC teams would make their debut in 1989 albeit on different levels. Former Rallycrosser Mark Rennison had gotten his fingers on the Andy Rouse built ex Ford France RS500 intending to do a season on a limited budget, while JQF and Trakstar was all out projects. Having bought the little used CC Motorsport RS500 for the first races JQF would continued their successful relationship with sponsor Fina oil and hiring single seater exponent Gerrit Van Kouwen, while working on their own RS500 with an anti roll suspension set-up for the second half. Trakstar was the collected efforts of former production saloon rivals Mike Smith and Robb Gravett who both had BTCC experience from the previous season. With John Whickham managing the new team and their newly imported pair of highly regarded Australian Dick Johnson cars through mutual sponsor Shell. Initially the taciturn Johnson was rejecting selling any car at all, but finally his two original 1987 cars went to the UK with engine man Neal Lowe along for initial help on the highly personalised engine compartment. Mike Smith would have the original Johnson car as his 1989 weapon while Gravett would have the well rested car of Gregg Hansford, nearly unraced in 1988, at his disposal, while Gravetts contacts at Yokohama secured an exclusive deal with the Japanese tyre manufacture.
Almost forgotten was the Trident Maserati. Czech Australian with a past single seater history in Britain Tomas Mezera was mentioned as driver early in the year. The MIL Toyota Supras were nowhere to be seen with one car being converting to Thunder Saloon specs with an RS500 engine!
Although the prospect of ETCC guest appearances from the now BMW hired Steve Soper in an Eggenberger RS500 or NISMO Europe Skyline had went the same way, it seemed that there would be even more classified opposition to the previous Andy Rouse superiority.

Class B (2001-3000 cc)
Defending champion Frank Sytner, Prodrive and BMW GB would continue their efforts with new signing James Weaver replacing Mike Smith. John Maguire would be back with his two car operation for Godfrey Hall and John Clark while Alan Minshaw and Ian Forrest both had ex-Prodrive equipment in their hands. These six cars would be regulars for 1989 sometimes joined by Swede Nettan Lindgren on the back of four straight national Ladies Cup titles.

Class C (1601-2000 cc)
John Cleland, continuing with preparing specialist Dave Cook, would drive the recently homologated 16 valve version of the Vauxhall Astra GT/E and followed quite lately by lady rallydriver and fellow Scott’s-person Louise Aitken-Walker would join the BTCC in a rally car set up for tarmac usage no less. In the Peugeot Talbot camp Porsche protagonist Mike Jordan was centre of activity in a Peugeot 309 GTI, though only the 8 valve version, so underpowered until the new 16 valve version was homologated.
The Alan Minshaw VW Golf GTI 16V had often been the class of the rather thin field with a variety of drivers during 1988, would now have its owner as the regular driver. John Morris would make a welcome return to BTCC action in another VW Golf, making class C the most varied if the smallest in 1989.

Class D (Under 1600 cc)
Phil Dowsett had been the class of the field during 1988 and would continue although with a much reduced input from Toyota. Similar front drive Corollas were prepared for Les Liddiard and Tony Dolley, while the regular rear wheel drive cars of Geoff Kimber-Smith and Tony Crudgington should still provide some entertainment. A brand new Honda Civic build by Graham Goode and to be run by the new Trakstar outfit was supposed to appear with Ray Armes driving, when homologation issues were dealt with.

The need to have enough starters for Cleland to score full points would result in Vauxhall fielding a 3rd Astra in the second half of the season for Jeremy Rossiter- Tony Lanfranchi's Monorep prodsaloon example also appearing a couple of times at the end of the year

Phil Dowsett had been the class of the field during 1988 and would continue although with a much reduced input from Toyota. Added a few extra thoughts- I'll dig out the '89 results, as I think I've got most of them- I know there are some gaps, as the Autosport reports didn't always give a complete rundown of the result....

Most information I'll post regarding 1989 will be from Autosport, annoingly yet again missing the opening round at Oulton Park. There's a fair few pics on the TNF RS500 of that race though. I thought I had a decent overview of the points situation but haven't found it as of yet. Think it might have been from the days of pen and paper

Round 1 of 13 of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Good Friday March 24 1989 over x laps on the x.xxx miles/x.xxx kms Oulton Park circuit.
Weather seemed to be sunny but cold.
Rolling start mandatory for 1989.
Grid formation: 2-2-2-etc.

The fortunes of both Pinkney and Brodie was reported in the round 2 report, telling of Pinkney and the Drury team unable to get the car to run properly thus not qualifying.
The top-6 grid positions taken from a now deleted picture in the TNF RS500 thread, but had Rouse and Gravett on the front row, Hodgetts and one Labatt's car on the second, with the second Labatt's car on the inside of Edwards on the third.
The team/sponsor section taken from later Autosport reports.
Interested to know who Ray Selley is as the team of Phil Dowsett for 1989.

Testing a new way of posting results - and it works a lot easier!

Somehow fourth in class C was not recognised for Mike Jordan and according to my notes he was disqualified. But looking at the relevant Autosport report he is classified as a finisher.
Sean Walker likely to not have been classified completing only 60 % of the class winning driver. Makes no difference in the points and barely in the results.
Five Star Racing was the name behind Geoff Kimber-Smith, but still his own team I suspect.
The Dave Brodie RS500 is seen going through the opening corner being all white with Atari backing on the front - his sponsor from the Mitsubishi days. This seems to have been the last time he was running in this colour scheme.
Does anyone has information about the Corolla AE82s of Tony Dolley and Les Liddiard? Both cars seems to have been run by their driver and presumably built for the 1989 season. Although the same model as that of Phil Dowsett, were they in the same spec.?

Andy Rouse leading the race hotly persued by Robb Gravett who started to fall away at two thirds distance with a broken exhaust and handling issues. Third was disputed among the two Labatt's cars decided in favour of Laurence Bristow as Tim Harvey picked up a puncture and had to pit for a new tyre.
In class B James Weaver and Frank Sytner was at it from the opening moments. Sytner was relieved of his front bumper on the opening lap by Jerry Mahony. The two of them would swap paint for the next almost 15 laps till a tyre was cut on Sytner's car sending him spinning into the greenery and out of the race. Godfrey Hall, a close third in the early going, inherited second, while third was disputed among Nettan Lindgren, Ian Forrest and John Llewellyn, John spinning out of contention.
The Vauxhalls would dominate class C, Cleland driving from 4th and final C contender to the lead within the first lap, while Louise Aitken-Walker had to fight Alan Minshaw for second.
Geoff Kimber-Smith would lead class D only to retire with a broken engine, leaving it to Tony Crudgington and Phil Dowsett to settle things. Dowsett would win comfortably as Crudgington would retire his RWD Corolla with an engine failure too.

Short news from early 1989 Autosports

5 January 1989
GM Dealer Sport annouces a BTCC programme with a Dave Cook prepared Vauxhall Astra GTE 16V for former GMDS Thunder Saloon driver John Cleland.

Gerrit van Kouwen rumoured for the JQF/Fina Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, but the team not responding to contact.

Andy Rouse propose the formation of a BTCC entrants association to further the prospects of the series. Val Adaway will take on the administrational side of things. As a part of the new formation an exclusive BTCC test day on March 19th has been organised at Donington Park.

Ian Forrest announces his BTCC programme in an ex-Prodrive BMW M3 thas has been fully rebuild. In addition he will defend his Scottish Special Saloon title in the Drambuie-Imp and fielding a Davrian for Bob Jamieson, whose sponsorship has been vital for the BTCC effort (Drambuie?)

Champion spark plugs has announced a bonus programme including the BTCC.

Chris Hodgetts stays put at Brooklyn Motorsport running the same Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth being build for the late 1988 races. A Terry Hoyle engine will be powering the car when testing begins next month.

John Maguire Racing will definitely run BMW Dealers Godfrey Hall (Birmingham) and John Clark (?) in this years BTCC, possibly adding a third car depending on sponsorship.

26 January 1989
Des O'Dell of Peugeot Talbot Sport has announced that Mike Jordan will contest the BTCC in a Peugeot 309 GTI prepared by Barford Motorsport of Warwick, with components and technical support of PTS.

Mike Smith and Robb Gravett will be joined by 1988 Prodrive BTCC-manager Malcolm Swetnam on the board of the newly started Trakstar team. Swetnam will be responsible for the running of the team as well as the team manager role at races. With Dick Johnson Racing nearing completion of both cars at his Queensland, Australia work shop, Gravett will shortly depard for down under to shake down test the cars in early February. Meanwhile Smith will have to wait until February 6th to be given the get-go on his driving, still undergoing physio from his helicopter crash.

Quantum, the UK Volkswagen spare parts unit, will part sponsor four entries in this years Class C: Andrew Jeffrey, John Morris, Alan Minshaw and a TBA from GTI Engineering.

Ford will again be supplying 3-door Sierra shells for Group A and N.

GTI Engineering has not taken a decision on weather to contest Group A or Production Saloon in 1989, but it might be with Richard Lloyd himself behind the wheel.

Jerry Mahony has lapped Thruxton close to Andy Rouse's lap record with a 1m21s. As in 1988 Mahony will race a Roger Dowson prepared RS500 backed by Arquati, Evans Halshaw Ford, Shell and Dunlop using Andy Rouse engines.

John Llewellyn will be racing the BMW M3 Frank Sytner secured his 1988 title with at the Silverstone finals. The car is to be prepared by Roy Kennedy of Burke Ratcliffe Motorsport and run under the Ronic Sport banner. Sponsor will be Johnstons of Chichester.

16 February 1989
Karl Jones has retained Duckhams as sponsor of the Asquith Autosport RS500 he raced in 1988, but is likely to exchange the previous Avon tyres for something else.

23 February 1989
While Trakstar is about to move into their new Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, location Robb Gravett has been to Australia to test the two newly acquired Dick Johnson cars. Cars expected to be flown to Britain within the next 10 days, while DJR engineer Neal Lowe has completed set-up of the first engine in Britain. David Mountain of Mountune will look after the engines through the season.

Labatt's has announced a two year deal sponsoring Laurence Bristow and Tim Harvey in the BTCC, racing a pair of Andy Rouse prepared Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth.

Tomas Mezera rumoured to drive the Trident Maserati Biturbo.

Listerine will sponsor both Graham Goode and Mike Newman in this years season in a pair of RS500s.

The expected deal betwin Gerrit van Kouwen and JQF Engineering/FINA is annouced.

Mark Rennison has bought an RS500 but will have to sell off his rallycross Ford RS200E to finance his season.

Plans of a new 2.0 litre one class saloon car class to replace the current Group A.

Fina once again to back the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone.

16 March 1989
Terry Drury Racing will race three Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworths in 1989 for Mike O'Brien (ex-Tim Harvey car), Robin Donovan and David Pinkney.

Sean Walker will race a customer Graham Goode Racing RS500 in 1989.

The BTCC committee has voted for rolling starts on Friday March 10 as a more spectacular and safer procedure of starting the races.

The bonus point for fastest lap will for 1989 only be granted if at least four starters appear in class. Previously only two had to start for the exstra point to be given.

The guys I think were ex hotrodders and club racers and didn't run any major sponsorship that I can recall?

Enthusiastic as they were, the best these guys could do was prop up the class entries as they were quite uncompetitive, although I suspect quite useful in helping ensure that the baby class had as many entries as possible as Dowsett was the the 'class of the class' and capable of challenging for the overall championship.

After his BTCC exploits, Dolley later campaigned his car in modprods IIRC?

Re GTI, I'm guessing they were contemplating entering another Golf GTi 16V in Class C? However there might have been discussion about Audi's or something, can't quite recall?

Re the TT, unfortunately as we all know it was cancelled (or at least not run to Group A regs) as the traditional ETC backbone had gone after the cancellation of that series. Like many i'm sure, I was massively dissappointed by all of this as I was looking forward to Rouse matching upto Eggenberger and hopefully several Australian and German entries!

Re Trident/Mezera: Tomas was a fine driver and it's a shame he didn't get behind the wheel of a Sierra full time after helping Tony Longhurst to his '88 Bathurst win in one) as i'm sure he would've been a major threat to Rouse and Gravett!

Found the 1989 Autosport review where it's noted that Ray Selley and Les Liddiard took over the running of the Dowsett car from Dowsett himself mid-season, but not stating exactly when.

Count me in on that one, although the '89 TT would have collided with the still very well supported Sandown 500 warm-up to Bathurst. The Australians would likely not have been at Silverstone.

Thinking about it, Mezera's most consistent touring car drives was as co-driver to both the Holden Special Vehichles team/Holden Racing Team/Larry Perkins Engineering teams.

Testing a new way of posting results - and it works a lot easier!

Somehow fourth in class C was not recognised for Mike Jordan and according to my notes he was disqualified. But looking at the relevant Autosport report he is classified as a finisher.
Sean Walker likely to not have been classified completing only 60 % of the class winning driver. Makes no difference in the points and barely in the results.
Five Star Racing was the name behind Geoff Kimber-Smith, but still his own team I suspect.
The Dave Brodie RS500 is seen going through the opening corner being all white with Atari backing on the front - his sponsor from the Mitsubishi days. This seems to have been the last time he was running in this colour scheme.

Andy Rouse leading the race hotly persued by Robb Gravett who started to fall away at two thirds distance with a broken exhaust and handling issues. Third was disputed among the two Labatt's cars decided in favour of Laurence Bristow as Tim Harvey picked up a puncture and had to pit for a new tyre.
In class B James Weaver and Frank Sytner was at it from the opening moments. Sytner was relieved of his front bumper on the opening lap by Jerry Mahony. The two of them would swap paint for the next almost 15 laps till a tyre was cut on Sytner's car sending him spinning into the greenery and out of the race. Godfrey Hall, a close third in the early going, inherited second, while third was disputed among Nettan Lindgren, Ian Forrest and John Llewellyn, John spinning out of contention.
The Vauxhalls would dominate class C, Cleland driving from 4th and final C contender to the lead within the first lap, while Louise Aitken-Walker had to fight Alan Minshaw for second.
Geoff Kimber-Smith would lead class D only to retire with a broken engine, leaving it to Tony Crudgington and Phil Dowsett to settle things. Dowsett would win comfortably as Crudgington would retire his RWD Corolla with an engine failure too.

From the same issue of Autosport, here's another few short news:

Jeff Allam to team up with Robb Gravett for the forthcoming 1 hour enduro.

A new regulations states that if less than four drivers starts or indeed completes the first two laps, no points will be issued. Geoff Kimber-Smith immediately falls victim to this rule, loosing his points from the opening Oulton Park race!

Louise Aitken-Walker made her BTCC debut at the Silverstone race, racing her Cartel Rally Dave Cook prepared car in tarmac trim. Her presence bolstered the class C entries to the minimum four for any points to be destributed! A third car is rumoured for Malcolm Wilson.

The Trident Maserati still has to make it's seasonal debut with Tomas Mezera driving. Before the expected Thruxton debut, the car has received parts from Italy and will see testing by Tickford.

Tony Hilton of Hilton Racing Services will also make his debut at Thruxton in a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth.

Regarding the last bit of news, never heard of Hilton racing in the BTCC.

27 April 1989
Phil Dowsett has received sponsorship from building contractors Smith & Latimer courtesy of 1987 Class C winner Colin Pearcy for the forthcoming Thruxton 1 May event. It's speculated the two will pair of for the TT.

Malcolm Wilson lined up to co-drive Louise Aitken-Walker, while Mark Lovell slated to co-drive with both Karl Jones and Mark Rennison!

As I remember, Ray Selley and Les Liddiard set up a new operation named 'Rayscar' or something like that sometime after half-way through the season to run the Dowsett and Liddiard Corollas. I think Selley was ex-TOM'S GB, so had been involved with the Dowsett car pretty much from it's first appearances in '87

I think the Hilton car appeared in entry lists from time to time, but no more than that- I'm sure it was in the entry for the round supporting the Group C sportscars at Brands in July, so I can probably find an intended race number for it!

Andy Rouse dominating the early laps from pole, but from a comfortable lead retires after 4 laps with electrical issues cutting the engine. This was the second retirement for Rouse in the first three races! Second early in the race Chris Hodgetts was already slipping down the order with water spraying over his rear tyres, eventually forcing his retirement.
Dave Brodie thus ended as new leader finally winning having followed Tim Harvey for the first tours. Teammate Laurence Bristow was forth the Labatt's pair sandwitching Guy Edwards in the now sole Kaliber car. Both Edwards and Bristow would later have moments leaving them down the order. Edwards was able to pit for new tires while Bristow retired. This left third to Karl Jones ahead of the Goode pairing of Mike Newman and Sean Walker, while Robb Gravett fought handling issues and Jerry Mahony for sixth.
James Weaver dominated most of the race for the class B runners only to be succesfully actacked by teammate Frank Sytner on the last race. This despite Sytner running a spare car on older compound tyres after crashing his intended car during qualifying. Godfrey Hall was fighting off John Llewellyn for third in the opening laps before tyre issues forced Llewellyn to a pit stop for new covers.
John Cleland was looking secure in class C when he picked up a puncture eventually finishing third and with fastest lap. Alan Minshaw, with a standard gearbox breaking the racing unit in qualifying, fought for the lead before yet another puncture finished him fifth and last. John Morris also had moments at the front but had to give away to eventual winner Louise Aitken-Walker.
Phil Dowsett had Tony Crudgington in contention for class D lead, but the latter spun and misfired to second but fastest lap.

A fuel sample taken at the meeting later showed too much lead content from the Dave Brodie car, seing him disqualified and Harvey promoted to new winner. Brodie running without Atari sponsorship but the car now painted in silver, red and blue on the white car and Armstrong Rhinofloor as the only sponsor support I can make out.

He then went onto to use illegal fuel to back up that comment.....

Shame as I was quite excited by all the hulabaloo, Brodie's return to form and his showbiz style outburst!

The Dowsett car was IIRC pretty much self run and he struggled for budget all the way through. Your news snippet about the Smith & Latimer backing along with KA's post about the possible 'Rayscar' link up were both vital in getting Phil through the season i'd guess?

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Round 4 of 13 of the 1989 Esso British Touring Car Championship held on Sunday May 7th 1989 over 1 hour of the 3.149 kms Donington Park National Circuit.

Grid consisting of the first five qualifiers in each class and that a class can only make up 40 % of the grid. Apparantly the National circuit was open to 30 cars meaning a maximum of 12 class A
from 14 being allowed to start at 4pm.

Win for Laurence Bristow and Tiff Needell with tyre conservation and a well executed pit stop. Robb Gravett would lead away from pole but later Jeff Allam would fight low boost and wires on fire to finish second. Guy Edwards and Win Percy finished third on the road only to be disqualified as Percy hadn't qualified this but the sister Kaliber car of an already retired Andy Rouse.
Class B looked to be set up for Steve Soper and Frank Sytner, but as the race went on only sixth gear worked reliably dropping them to forth. Instead Frank Sytner and Will Hoy took a steady victory from privateers John Llewellyn/Gerry Marshall and Ian Forrest/Hunter, the last pair suffering from failing fuel pressure in the end.
John Cleland and Ian Flux won an easy class C victory after Barrie Williams in the John Morris VW Golf kept the pressure on for the opening laps. This was too much for the Golf and overheating problems forced it out midway through leaving second to the second Vauxhall of Louise Aitken-Walker and Vince Woodman.
Class D lost half its contenders within six laps leaving an easy victory for Phil Dowsett and Mark Goddard ahead of Tony Crudgington and Chuck Nicholson.

Autosport reports the John Morris/Barrie Williams VW Golf to have recorded similar 1:21.16 times during both qualifying and race! Unlikely I'd say, but does anyone know the correct fastest race lap of the team?

Thruxton-on-the-road-winner Dave Brodie had a spin due to a puncture early on and finished a lowly 10th overall.

Ian Forrest and Les Liddiard partnered with drivers unknown to me.

Time keepers apparantly forgot to note three laps for a sick Chris Hodgetts during qualifying meaning that only co-driver David Leslie was registered for a fast enough lap. Graham Goode was having engine troubles hindering any competitive times.

In the news section it's mentioned that Jerry Mahony will soon take delivery of a Dick Johnson car to be powered by an engine preparation specialist new to the BTCC. Can't for the moment think of any available Dick Johnson cars by mid-1989!

The fortunes of both Pinkney and Brodie was reported in the round 2 report, telling of Pinkney and the Drury team unable to get the car to run properly thus not qualifying.
The top-6 grid positions taken from a now deleted picture in the TNF RS500 thread, but had Rouse and Gravett on the front row, Hodgetts and one Labatt's car on the second, with the second Labatt's car on the inside of Edwards on the third.
The team/sponsor section taken from later Autosport reports.
Interested to know who Ray Selley is as the team of Phil Dowsett for 1989.

Added in the rest of the result as I have it- it does include a couple of mysteries- I've got Dowsett classified as a finisher in 20th, and Bristow and Lindgren not classified, although running and apparently having covered more laps than Dowsett- Can anyone confirm whether I've got the number of laps wrong for these, or whether there's another reason?

There's even a mentioning of the Dowsett car missing a late season race due to being prepared for Macau, although I can't remember Dowsett himself racing in the then Portugese colony.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in with some info from the BSP round!

I got a copy of the official qualifying times. Interestingly Alan Minshaw took two cars to Birmingham, his no. 30 BMW M3 car which he attempted to qualify and also he brought his no. 50 VW Golf GTi but it was never ran.

Graham Hathway and Robin Donovan arrived in Birmingham with their own Ford Sierra RS500s but never took part in the qualifying sessions.

Where is the 1990 BTCC thread so I can contribute there?

Win for Laurence Bristow and Tiff Needell with tyre conservation and a well executed pit stop. Robb Gravett would lead away from pole but later Jeff Allam would fight low boost and wires on fire to finish second. Guy Edwards and Win Percy finished third on the road only to be disqualified as Percy hadn't qualified this but the sister Kaliber car of an already retired Andy Rouse.
Class B looked to be set up for Steve Soper and Frank Sytner, but as the race went on only sixth gear worked reliably dropping them to forth. Instead Frank Sytner and Will Hoy took a steady victory from privateers John Llewellyn/Gerry Marshall and Ian Forrest/Hunter, the last pair suffering from failing fuel pressure in the end.
John Cleland and Ian Flux won an easy class C victory after Barrie Williams in the John Morris VW Golf kept the pressure on for the opening laps. This was too much for the Golf and overheating problems forced it out midway through leaving second to the second Vauxhall of Louise Aitken-Walker and Vince Woodman.
Class D lost half its contenders within six laps leaving an easy victory for Phil Dowsett and Mark Goddard ahead of Tony Crudgington and Chuck Nicholson.

Autosport reports the John Morris/Barrie Williams VW Golf to have recorded similar 1:21.16 times during both qualifying and race! Unlikely I'd say, but does anyone know the correct fastest race lap of the team?

Thruxton-on-the-road-winner Dave Brodie had a spin due to a puncture early on and finished a lowly 10th overall.

Ian Forrest and Les Liddiard partnered with drivers unknown to me.

Time keepers apparantly forgot to note three laps for a sick Chris Hodgetts during qualifying meaning that only co-driver David Leslie was registered for a fast enough lap. Graham Goode was having engine troubles hindering any competitive times.
Forrest's co-driver was Bernard Hunter- I think he came from the same Scottish club racing background as Forrest.
Liddiard possibly shared with Steve King- not sure if it's the same Steve King who was around in Thundersaloons in the 80's

I think that Minshaw had given up on the Golf by Birmingham. I have seen an engine blow up being mentioned in one of the previous rounds.

Great stuff, guys! A few notes and questions on the stuff covered so far:
  • A few car numbers need updating:
    #3 - Mike Newman
    #4 - Graham Goode
    #17 - Mike O'Brien
    #18 - Robin Donovan (O'Brien/Donovan used this car in the Donington 1hr race)
    #31 - John Clark
    #44 - John Llewellyn
  • I was under the impression that Bristow's 1988 car was sold and a new car used for 1989. I think I asked the question in the '88 thread with the response that it was sold to Asia. Doesn't 10-Tenths member Martinlabatts own the 89-90 Bristow car, now?
  • Graham Goode's retirement from Round 1 at Oulton Park should be listed as accident damage. Goode was exiting Old Hall on lap 1 when the Labatt's Sierra in front of him suddenly slowed. Goode slowed, but Mike Smith behind him didn't, hitting the right rear of the Listerine Sierra hard. Goode maintained control of the black Sierra, but slowed and retired with damaged suspension.
  • John Clark's retirement from Round 2 was an accident, but I suspect he had help. Clark crashed into the wall on the inside of the Hangar straight on the approach to Stowe. The skidmarks start on the inside of the track near the braking area, so it wouldn't surprise me if he was punted off by someone. It certainly would explain his angry exit from the car, as shown on the review video!
  • It's a small distinction, but Kimber-Smith had already been passed by Crudgington and Dowsett before he retired from Round 2. They comfortably outdragged him down the Hangar Straight on lap 1, probably an indicator of the engine problem that would cause his retirement.
  • Why were Hodgetts/Leslie and Goode/Lyall non-starters for Round 4 at Donington? I assume both cars had mechanical problems during practice/qualifying. Why didn't Leslie start when Nick May had started the race single-handed the year before? To save money when there was no chance of a result? And how was the Listerine car considered too slow when it was not the slowest qualifier overall? Did the RAC enforce an 'outside X% of fastest in class' regulation? Was there no mechanism in the regulations that would allow Goode's car to start, considering the car's usual performance? I know these questions are probably not covered in the race reports, but I'm just curious in how the British approach compared to the Australian approach of the time.

Yes, I think the Labatt's cars were new for 1989 as well. 'Martinlabatts' has owned both cars, the Harvey car which is now in Australia, and the Bristow car which I think he still had- it's a bit of a hybrid, restored to Labatt's colours, although it's still in the Thundersaloon spec that Bristow had it converted to- IIRC it ran with Arquati and Securicor Omega Express sponsorship in that spec, but never Labatt's

From memory, where the entry exceeded the usually-allowed number of starters, they sometimes used effectively a 'quota' system, so the fastest X number of cars in each class would get a start- the 'outside X% of fastest in class' rule is another possibility.
Alternatively, they may have only been listed as reserves in an over-subscribed entry- to be honest, I don't know which circumstances apply, it's one that's been puzzling me since I looked at the result

Given the below-par performance of the Goode car in qualifying (Jesper mentioned engine problems), did the team ever intend to start both cars after one had problems?- note they'd only got three drivers (Goode, Newman and Lyall) to handle the two cars, and I won't swear to this, but the Motoring News report might have suggested that all three drivers qualified in the Newman car at least, if not both?

Re the Brooklyn car, Jesper mentioned that Chris Hodgetts was sick- again, is it possible that Chris might have decided he wasn't fit to race and opted to withdraw the car after he failed to qualify?

Could well be rear suspension as you say- I haven't watched the review video in a while. I've also got a vague memory that the car might also have been dragging it's exhaust system- from memory Smith had a big 'rallycrossing' moment, taking a trip across the infield after going off possibly between McLeans and Coppice earlier in the race?

As reported from the race any class could only make up 40 % of the grid made up of 30 cars. In the Autosport report it's reported as "12 from 14 Sierras will be allowed to race" or something similar. There seems to have been done some tidying up of the sporting regulations in early 1989, which explain that one driver starting for a two driver race was a no-no by 1989.
The Goode Sierra was still the 14th and slowest RS500 due to what is described as a cronic misfire, while Hodgetts wasn't reported to have done any quick laps during qualifying.

I was a bit perplexed at this item too, as the six DJR cars seems to have been well covered on various threads, but will look out for any relevant news regarding the matter during 1989.

The mis-fire in practice became much worse, so much so that despite the efforts of the team (and suggestions from others) could not be cured for the race.
