DTM Invitational race at Kyalami 1990
I have been trying to find information regarding this race on the 18th of November 1990 at Kyalami South-Afrifa.
Found a short article in a German magazine, and a few pictures in the Mercedes Archives in Stuttgart
But what i havent found are starting lists, race reports. Would be interesting to know what cars (build numbers) that entered.
Tried to contact the South-African motorsport organisation and Kyalami racetrack but no luck so far.

I will have a look in my Motoring News collection and see what I have got.
Sorry, I haven't got anything in the 21st November edition.
EDIT>> Worth a look in Frank de Jong's excellent website:

Thank you very much, im still however missing some participants, for example. I have a very nice picture of Jochen Mass in a yellow mercedes in Camel livery.
Roland Asch drove a similiar car in the same livery.
Entrants lists with build numer of each car would be very interesting to look at.

Welcome dtm-archives. Whilst there are many external websites with mines of info for people seeking specific info, I hope forum members can assist you in your research and in the process develop a discussion on here!
I think I saw a image of a Camel liveried 190 in another thread on here a few months back. Anyone else remember that?

Hi, that was probably me asking about Roland Asch Camel car, since then i have grown a rather big interest in the Kyalami Races. There was one in 1991 too, but not that much info regarding that race either im afraid.
Ill post some pics i have on sunday, in the meantime ill post some info not mentioned on Frank de Jongs page.
Distance: 2 x 25 laps á 3.825 km = 2 x 96.625 km
25 Entries
23 startes round 1
17 starters round 2
Fastest lap: Roland Asch 1.30.66 Min
The article in the german magazine Rallye Racing, talks about a local South-African newspaper referring to Aschs car as the "mystery car", i wonder what newspaper this could have been?
Its been confirmed that the Camel car from Roland Asch still, its currently in storage at the Mercedes Classic Center in Fellbach outside Stuttgart. Its still in its original condition

Was there more than two Camel backed cars in the '90 or '91 races?
Seem to recall one or two local guys taking part?

As far as i know only two Camel mercedes participated, but Roland Asch also had a t-car, which might also have been in Camel livery.
I found two south-african guys in the starting list driving mercedes
Sarel van der Merwe, Mercedes Evo 2, AMG Kärcher team
Christian Aberdein, sharing car with Jörg van Ommen.

DTM Invitational race at Kyalami 1990
The Mercedes Benz EVO 1 car "Camel" in Kyalami was the factory development car and in a very strong competition to AMG. The car had an
internal factory no. M7 Musterwagen (englisch= sample car) and was sent to
Kyalami in silver grey painted. We receiced our car M7 in Kyalami 2 days too late because the car was changed from silver grey into Camel yellow without
any information to us (factory engineering)and additional taped on windscreen with "AMG South Africa and send for two days for AMG Exhibitions
around SA.After this deal with AMG and chief of Mercedes we reasigned after 20 years at Mercedes Benz-and signed at BMW and Toyota.
The car M7 was the development car for ABS,Lightweight and Active Suspension and the rollcage was calculated in the factory and built at Heggemann. Before Kyalami the car was given for two Races to Snobek painted as AEG Olympia 12 (us was not allowed for this races to help Snobek with settings). In 1990 we had all inofficial DTM-Laprecords in Germany with M7.(After Kyalami race was written "the war of stars")

Hi and thank you for the very interesting information. That is completely new to me.
Is there a reason that Mercedes Sport Technik used the same type of roll-cage that Snobeck used during the 1990 season in both the Evo 1 and Evo 2?
It's a very special design compared to the Matter built cages in the AMG cars.
Did Snobeck themselfs build the other cars used by them in the 1990 season, with the same kind of rollcage, or were they built from bodys with roll-cages supplied by Mercedes ST?
For example this car has chassis numer of 1989CS07:
http://dtm-archives.com/index.php?page=view&car_id=17
And clearly has the same kind of roll-cage as the Kyalami car from Asch.
There as far as i know, three cars still in existence with this roll-cage, would all three have a Snobeck build number or would the Kyalami only have M7 stamped?

DTM Invitational race Kyalami 1990
the Kyalami car No.3 "Camel" is marked still somewhere as M7.
The white bodys for the teams of Snobek and the factory development cars
had been all prepared, reinforced, welded and torsionmeasured in the factory in
Sindelfingen-the rollcages were also fixed in Sindelfingen by specialists from
Heggemann. the chassisnumbers of the development-teamcars i dont know.
But all the own factory cars had "M-Numbers".
There had been built following factory own developmentcars:
M1 - 1988
M2 - 1988 - Dunlop Diagonal Kevlar Tyres
M3 - 1988 - the first car for real further Development
M4 - 1989 - was used for tyretesting Yokohama,Pirelli Radialtyres
M5 - 1989 - was completely burning down at rollout Nürburgring
M6 - 1989-1990 - only used for active Suspension
M7 - 1989-1990 - Lightweight,Kynematics,ABS, 2 races for Snobek as "AEG Olympia" with Alain Cudini and as "Camel" in Kyalami 1990

From memory, the main English language Johaannesburg papers were, and probably still are: The Rand Daily Mail, The Citizen, The Star (evening paper)
I think the main Afrikaans paper was Die Burger
