John, he was driving quite OK, (he has a bike racing background). Talking about whom should be allowed to drive in Monaco will need a separate thread, with an immense can of worms I am sure Roger W will be able to give you at least one name already...

The way I saw it the stature seems to offer somewhere wide enough to rest one's elbows whilst working those relatively enormous steering wheels. I'm surprised it's not compulsory.

Merzario would not be able to participate under such conditions. (even when his 8C does run)

I don't suppose any of those cars are easy or light to drive at any great rate of knots so you certainly wouldn't want to be a bulemic jockey in stature

Agreed. I suspect he may have prepared well for a transition to cars.

and for that matter, the third placed car was driven by Paolo Barilla, perhaps not the most famous name, but still the 1985 Le Mans winner...

I am told both Barilla and Marzotto did thousands of miles of practice for Monaco. I don't know about Ben Barker. All I know is I sat in my car for the first time on Thursday, and that was to do the seat fitting! My definite highlight was being congratulated by Neil Trundle when on the grid for the final on Sunday - he ran the same car for Tom Pryce in 1974.
Eje Elgh said he was amazed at the level of competition - he incidentally did very well - first race for 18 years! Nice guy to boot.

Absolutely brilliant event...

We absolutely squeezed everything out of it, had 5 very long days, walked bl**dy miles, 3 nights in 'Stars & Bars' + 'La Rascasse', and one night in an Indian... went to the RM Auction and saw some great racing in great cars.

Iain/Delta - I did come looking for you on Thursday evening but your crew said you had retired to the truck. If you're at Brands soon, I'll try and say hello...

Sunday evening in that Paddock was very sad - it was like the circus had left town...

and for those who missed Barker's lap of honour, it was cut short, going back via de F1 pit to the paddock...
Marcus, you've got a PM.

Not sure about Ben Barker but I got the impression that preparation with access to the car was quite limited.

Having finally got around to Googling Mr. Marzotto it seems that his outings on bikes were brief - just one season. He has, apparently, participated in the Paris-Dakar (2002 in a UniMog in the trucks category) with Paulo Barilla who does have an extensive and partially successful history of car racing with a briefish foray into F1.

However Mr. Marzotto's main claim to fame, other than his charity support, seems to be as a former President of a large Fashion House and an Italian Tourist board.

Wikipedia, translated by Bing, has this information.

===========

Matteo Marzotto (Rome, 26 September 1966) is an entrepreneur , Italianmanager and until 2008 Chairman of fashion house Valentino S.p.A., later President ofENIT (Agenzia Nazionale del Turismo).

Is the son of count Umberto Francis and Marta Vacondio[1].

As described above has made clear in a Press Conference at Palazzo Chigi[2] that intends to achieve goals for the relaunch of tourism promotion ofItaly in international markets.

He was General Manager of operating Valentino[3] and is Vice-President of the Foundation Research for cystic fibrosis.[4]

He participated in the Paris-Dakar 2002 with Paolo Barilla[5].

In 2009 he raced as a professional motorcycle rider participating in the Italian speed Championship Supersport with Kawasaki. Participates in all six races in the calendar, earning a tenth place in the race at Misano and finishing 23rd in the standings with 2.5 points.[6]

=====================

Can't knock his Monaco driving. Seemed solid and I have some shots of a great catch as he exited the swimming pool area having slightly overcooked things (qualifying on Friday) before setting the pole time for his heat.

The Friday sequence. Gathered it together and carried on.
