People under 30 are getting into things like drifting because the cost of entry is not that high and you can even be competitive with not a lot of money compared to major circuit racing series. It's also loud and showy, which a lot of modern circuit racing lacks. I don't really have the answer except to say the market will adjust in time to what it wants and what it can afford. |

We get a few oldies competing at D1 events too ya know
The drift crowd follow their driver, or their engine package. Some people like V8 conversions others love rotaries much in the same way we have ford vs holden. 6 cyl or 4? theres so much variety and thers somthing for everyone young and old, the best part is in the world of drifting a little 86kw toyota corolla can deal it to a 450hp v8 Ive said this before, at the end of the day we havent done anything revolutionary, just the basics - cheap gate sales, the ability to bring in your food & drink (depending on the track) and good door-to-door rubbing 'racing' Drifting will be everyone's biggest competition. Its all about promoting to the right market and this year we are targeting families more so than we have in the past. V8 Racing in NZ is very much still a top tier form of motorsport and somthing people love to watch - problem is youve been hurt by **** poor promotion of drivers and the series itself. You talk to any of the V8ST guys and they are just amazed at how much theve been left behind in the world of promotion and especial social media. The top NZV8 teams over the last few years have had to promote the series themselves while TMC sit on their asses. Its just basics!! A website that works and DOESNT look like it was made on microsoft frontpage - actually ive seen better websites made back in my high school computer classes. Social media that's updated regularly - a billboard and a bit of signage so people know a race meeting is actually on, a tv ad that doesn't have clint brown narrating it with cliche graphics and most of this doesn't actually cost an arm & leg, its quite affordable. All it takes is a bit of effort and a bit of smart thinking in the unique cuthroat-media market that NZ has Oh, and open up media accreditation for a start - far more exposure for teams drivers and sponsors. RATTLA has done a bit of drifting too.... Last edited by KLR93; 6 Dec 2011 at 06:05. |

Hah.
It doesnt have to appeal to 'motorSPORT' fans because its pulling numbers through the gates who like cars. There is no debate, fact is its a sport - some people just need to get their head around it isnt about setting the fastest time or getting across the line first. It may be a judged sport but it is no different to a ref at a rugby match or the scoring at most of the olympic games. Its competitive, popular and on the rise and it IS the biggest competition circuit racing event organizers are going to have to beat to get anywhere in these fast changing times... |

drifting isn't like rugby.. it's more like ballroom dancing
In hot, dry conditions and in front of a 4000-strong crowd Whittaker withstood huge pressure as he battled his way to the top spot and $5000 worth of prizes courtesy winner's award sponsor Drift Max, beating local driver Matt Jackson (MJM Mazda RX7) to get into the Top 8 surely a Tier 1 meet can beat 4,000 Last edited by promax; 6 Dec 2011 at 08:43. |

Say what you like about drifting, but it is getting people involved at a 'club' level thanks to its affordability, drawing crowds at national level thanks to the excitement and show that it provides, and it is doing so a global scale. It is one of the few sectors of motorsport that is actually growing in popularity.
It isn't my cup of tea, but I can see how and why it is so attractive to the young market that nearly every entertainment business is going after. |

4,000 isnt bad for 1 field of cars, we had similar numbers at manfield
Also only 1 day, not a crowd multiplied by 3 days despite the same people attending the same days |

Yep I'll be there this weekend too. Hopefully it's not as hot as the Skope meeting in Feb
Will be interesting to see the support classes too. I hear there's some pretty cool things running in the GT classes. |

Foggy is smoking 'em.
Short's picked up a LOT of pace between rounds. and Edgell probably ain't where he'd like to be. |
