ST's rFactor Tracks
Hello all, i've finally managed to get a hold of BTB and rFactor and im going to start making my Sketchup tracks in BTB for you to download and race with in rFactor. My first track is still a WIP and is based on this. I have named it Circuit de Lorraine and it is based in north east France. It has had a few modifications from the original design but it is still a WIP so there will be changes before its finished. As I say, it's still a WIP so there no barriers or garages (yet) and it is just the layout i'm showing here. Hopefully it should be finished within a couple of weeks ready for you to download. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbtZ5...ature=youtu.be

Don't have rFactor, but it seems a bit stop start, and some of the turns feel unrealistically tight.

That could possibly be my driving. Ive only had the game since tuesday so im not 100% comfortable with the physics yet. Also the car has no setup work to it so its a bit of a handful to drive so im making the track look slower than it actually is. I think it would be possible to go round in under 1.30.

Even then, I think that some of those turns are tighter than Station Hairpin in Monte Carlo.

I liked what appeared to be 45 degree banking on some of the corners...a bit of cambre is fine, bit on one of the corners it looked like the car was running around the Nordschlife Carousel.

I kind of like it that some of the corners have got an unrealistically outrageous banking. For fantasy tracks and racesims, that's fine. It's great to witness a good looking racesim track being posted on here.Yet, I would like to see a track map, too. Please post one. Thank you.
Anyway, you say you haven't got much experience in rFactor yet. Is the track editor of the software really so easy to handle that you can come up with a circuit like this in a mere week? How many hours have you actually spent on it?

I should explain that the track editor is not part of rFactor. Its a separate program called Bob's Track Builder. Compared to general CAD programs, BTB is incredibly easy to make and edit tracks with. It takes some getting used to at first but there a good few youtube tutorials that explain everything and you can create a basic track in a few hours. The only time consuming thing about is how much detail you can go into. It only took me a few hours to perfect the layout and get the terrain quite smooth but since i'm going to put some detail (kerbs, stands, garages etc) into it i'm going to easily double or triple the time I've already spent on it. Hope that answers everything. Here the track map you were wanting as well.

Looking at the map, I'd say "it's a ginger!" Very Hugenholtzy. Thanks for the map.

Which brings me to one of my concerns with the design (besides the really sharp turns). As a fun fantasy track, that's fine; whatever. However, if the goal is to make believable circuits, I don't see something like this flying in reality. If someone did hypothetically create a track with that sort of steep hills on those corners, they definitely wouldn't be running top series like F1 on something like that. Personally, I desire some degree of believability in my course design.

It's such a good layout.
What tends to happen with me alot, and I think it may have happened with you, is that on 'paper', it looks fantastic. I'm then sometimes disappointed when I come to drive it.
Your track looks fantastic on paper, but i'm not sure that's translated on to the track itself. Some fantastic ideas, but a few things will help massively:
*Varying track width (ie. making some of the corners a little wider)
*Some props/houses/grandstands - this will help you remember what corner's coming up and give it some character/identification
*Look at using SLIGHTLY less extreme banking - I see that's definitely the look you want to pull off, but when a F1 car is nearly taking off, that's probably where you need to draw the line
Actually, at second glance, it's not QUITE as extreme as I thought.
I mainly think it just needs some detail, perhaps look at some different styles of tarmac, and just need to check out some of the track widths on corners!
Good work. Definitely want to see more. I wish I still had your old one My old harddrive died.

Version 2
Sort of stopped making this one for some reason. I started to agree with people on here saying it was unrealistic and a bit stop-start, so I'm now going to almost completely redesign the track now I know what I'm doing with BTB. The massive walls of banking will be more subtle and the elevation will be less extreme. Here's a map of what the new track will be like compared to the old one. (old track-red new track-black)

Would be good to catch up with you and discuss some good practices on BTB!

If you've got the time and skills, a week is more than enough. Bob's Track Builder is a great tool.
