Barcodes are of course increasingly an obsolescent technology.
Subcutaneous RFID anyone?

<weak TV reference>
with all this talk of numbers and barcodes instead of names, I am surprised that Numbersix hasnt run around shouting "I am *not* a number"
</weak TV reference>
Carry on....nothing to see here...

The sort of identity chip that's used with pets.
I jest (no really, I'm not serious here)

Paul, we have a hand scanner that reads those chips (for saddles and horses) so the technology is easily available .
Lets push for all being microchipped.

We're well off topic now, so what the heck. Could barcode scanners be on the gate thus granting entry without the need for tickets. Has the added advantage of letting the Chief know you attended for the (I suspect very rare) times someone might use a pass and not marshal?

Wifey has received her package today,(still waiting for mine) everything fits in the correct place in the wallet, impressive and a step in the right direction.
The only observation that stood out(that hasn't been mentioned), all upgrades are sectioned, but there isn't an I/O to Post Chief upgrade section.

More seriously -
We went to the GP at Spa a couple of years ago. Entry was by ticket (folded over card) with an embedded chip and the gate security had hand scanners to read them on entry.

There does not need to be an I/O to post chief - I/O is optional (as is Flag) - get to Experienced marshal then choose - Post chief, I/O or Flag. If you go I/O and/or flag, just fill in the Post Chief upgrade section when you then decide to move onwards and upwards

Hence the old BMRMC system for upgrading to Observer - main criteria for upgrade seemed to be waist size - one reason why I never made it to Observer
