Pedro Lamy to drive V8 Supercar
wow..I cant wait to see this.
It was announced by John briggs motorsport today that former Formula One and Sportscar driver Portugals Pedro lamy will test for the team in the near future and may line up in one of the teams 4 cars for next season.
There was also talk of another Formula One driver also testing for briggs and they are hoping to work something out for next year.
This is exciting news for V8's and while some will say No it should only be Aussie's and kiwi's I think this will be great for the series and welcome them in a big way.
I hope that Briggs can do a deal with lamy for next year and im sure he will perform fairly well.
but on that Briggs also stated that he was going to test 6 drivers ...ok so 2 are F1 guys or ex F1 but who are the other four ???
anyone got any ideas ?

I thought Briggs said that Lamy was signed, and that there was another driver who had contractual troubles overseas and was trying to sort them out.
This is great, the more internationals the better. Briggs better give him a car capable of winning though. He raced in the DTM last year and was going to race this year but felt that he couldn't win so pulled out before the start of the season.
So who is this other international driver?

This is exciting news for the series as it will give it an international flavour. It will be interesting to see how Pedro Lamy goes, does anyone know his Sedan racing experience?

This is great. I say bring em on. The more the merrier. This will add some extra interest (and a good international comparison) to next season.
As for the other driver - I don't think Mika Hakkinen has a drive yet.

met pedro lamy in a restaurent in barcelona (before spanish gp) when i was backpacking overseas in 1996 - as it turned out i shook his hand and wished him luck. pedro then driving for minardi did not complete a lap in the spanish gp, or the following 2 gp's ..... bet he dont want to meet me again , not even for a
pedro did the first 2 rounds of dtm this year, finishing 6th in both rounds before pulling out because he thought that he could not win in a year old car
best of luck in oz pedro - should be interesting

I don't get it....Wakefield is still without a drive!
Nothing personal against Lamy, I'm sure he'll set the world on fire..... but I'd imagine you could get some very competitive local drivers, much, much cheaper...

Didn't one of today comentaters say they saw Lamy at surfers desperatly looking for a drive. I hate to say it but an International driver must be short of cash to race in Australia.
But now that I have said that, my team for next year is Briggs and my driver for the 2002 year is Lamy. Who could the other driver be, I hope it s not Webber as I want him in F1.
V8's next year. I am all smiles

I agree..Lamy must demand a fair price tag ..but certainly not as much as a European drive ..and Im pretty sure wakefield would drive for almost peanuts to prove himself and there are countless others.
BUT ..I just thought ..has this been inspired by Tony Cochrane ???
He wants to take on the world remember ..he thinks V8's are better than champcars and im sure he thinks they are better than F1 ..so maybe he pushed Briggs in this direction to get a European star in a car to possibly open up a new market ..but thats only speculation.
as for the other driver ???
Briggs did say that he IS under contract but is having some problems ..so who could that be ???
Webber of course would be one ..as he doesnt know what is going on with Renault or Minardi for that matter..and even though i would like to see mark have a go in a V8 I have to agree with Champ69 that Iwould much rather see him in F1.
so who does that leave ??
someone from the struggling prost or Arrows teams perhaps ?
or even some test driver who is sick of testing and wants to race like Alex Wurz , Ricardo Zonta or even Marc gene ..who knows but I cant wait to find out

I've said before, and will ask again - what is the problem with Wakefield that no one wants to use him? There HAS to be a reason otherwise he would be driving a car now.
Is he trying to get too much out of a team? ($$$), ego, keeps chasing the team bosses wife/girlfriend/boyfriend?
There has to be a reason - either no one knows or no one is bothering to say...

His problem is that he didn't go through FFord, or has a rich father...
He would have gotten the drive with Gibson way back in 1998, but he didn't have the money. Ellery did.
He would have had a full time drive with Trimbole- once again, he didn't have the cash to pay for the ride when the free ride evaporated.
He could have kept going with Ryman, but once again, he didn't have the money.
The Graphic Skills drive was fantastic, but thanks to the GST, there isn't as much cash there these days to pay for as nearly as much motorsport. So that has been very quiet of late.
The Big Kev drive wont happen because he doesn't have the money.
In fact, the first time he has been paid to race was at Bathurst this year!

Briggs is asking a lot of money to drive with him, I would think that is why WW is not driving with him.
The rumour is Scott Pruet, Craig Baird and someone mentioned Menu as the testing drivers, at QR next week.

Not one F1 driver in those ones. Briggs said there could be one maybe two F1 drivers involved.

Pedro Lamy spent season 2000 racing in the DTM for Team Rosberg.
He did quite well at the wheel of the second string Merc CLK, scoring a number of 4th positions.
However, Lamy walked out of the team after 1 or 2 rounds of the 2001 DTM.
He felt that he could not win in the car he had been given. If he couldn't win, he did not want to be there.
The car was a 2000-spec CLK, whereas Schneider, Dumbreck, Alzen, Fassler and Team Manthey, [even though they were new to the series for 2001], were all running 2001-spec CLKs.
I just wonder what Lamy will think about the Briggs operation. JB struggled, and he is one of the most experienced people around to drive a V8Supercar.
