Freddie Careca dead?
Autosport are reporting that Frederico Careca died in a Euroboss race at Most at the weekend... terrible news. Was he the guy who used to race under the pseudonyms Pierre Chauvet and Umberto something or rather? If so a real stalwart of F2, F3, early F300 and WSPC has been taken from us. My sincerst condolences to his family, friends and the many teams this talented gentleman racer graced over the years. His sort of gentleman privateer is what made motor racing in past generations, a driver who raced for the love of the sport.
RIP

Yes - I remember 'Pierre Chauvet' from the first ever F3000 race at Silverstone. He was no makeweight and qualified well - although an off into the sleepers at Woodcote (remember them) in the warm up ended his day.
At least he died doing what he loved.......

Thought just struck me - was'nt he Jo Gartners partner in the Emco Spirit F2 team? I hope he and Jo are up there racing hard on some astral Osteichring, dukeing it out into the Bosch-kurve! Two of Austrias finest, real racers of the type thats sadly missing these days.

My most sincere condolences to Fritz "Frederico Careca" Glatz's family and friends.
How sad that so many Austrian drivers have perished - Jochen Rindt, Helmut Koinigg, Roland Ratzenberger, Jo Gartner, Markus Höttinger - or suffered terrible accidents - Niki Lauda and Gerhard Berger - in tracks around the world.

I forgot about Hottinger - he was highly rated, would have been their Bellof equivalent at the time... they've had their fair share of bad luck have'nt they.

Dear Ghinzani,
Poor Markus Höttinger - a brilliant young driver, who had overcome many obstacles to climb the motorsport ladder, and from whom so many great things were expected.
I would not compare him to Bellof, who I rank one of the very best drivers of all time (be welcome to check my user profile and you will see what I mean), but Höttinger was indeed a racer that could have had a brilliant future, sadly cut short abruptly on a freak accident in a F2 race in Hockenheim in 1980.
Höttinger, driving a Maurer on that fateful event, is believed to have been hit on the head by a tire that flew away from Derek Warwick's car, who had crashed his car in a high speed accident.
Warwick escaped relatively untouched, but Austria lost another fine driver, as Höttinger perished on the spot.
What a pity how few remember of him today.

Tribute to Frederico Careca
FREDERICO CARECA - 21st July 1943 - 14th July 2002
Austrian Frederico Careca was a Vienna industrialist who loved racing powerful cars even more than he enjoyed striking a good business deal.
The 58-year-old - real name Fritz Glatz - started competing 24 years ago and adopted a variety of pseudonyms over the years. During the 1980s he raced as Pierre Chauvet and competed intermittently in the FIA Formula 3000 series and its fore-runner, the European F2 Championship. He was usually to be found in the lower half of the field, although he startled rivals by qualifying and finishing sixth for a round of the Euro F2 series at Donington Park in August 1984. Either way, it was taking part that mattered.
In more recent years, racing as Careca, he focused on the Interserie sports car championship before acquiring an Arrows F1 chassis to compete in EuroBOSS events. This was initially fitted with a Nissan-based V12 engine, but this season he opted for Ford-Cosworth V8 power and was immediately on the pace.
He qualified second last weekend for what was to be his final race. Interviewed on the grid before the start, he said how much he was looking forward to the rest of the season - and particularly to giving the younger drivers a run for their money. He was doing just that when he had the accident that claimed him.
EuroBOSS series chief Roger Cowman said: "We will all miss him. He was a real character and a much quicker driver than people gave him credit for."
Our deepest sympathies go to Careca's family and friends.

I second that. Deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the BOSS fraternity.
I didn't know he was once Pierre Chauvet. I remember him in F2 from those days under that name.
