Trainees (Non existant Marshals) according to the MSA
From another thread I have found out that as a trainee marshal the MSA do not recognise our existence. We are still covered for insurance purposes by our MSA licence card. But as the card has no registration number we do not exist in the eyes of the MSA.
I phoned the MSA over something once and they asked for my licence number, I told them I was a trainee and was politely informed that I was not able to Marshal until I fill in a form and return it to them. What did I get, an application for a Rally Marshal!
Perhaps just perhaps when a new marshal turns up for their first day and atre issued with a licence they should be given provisional licence number and their details sent onto the MSA. This would also help the MSA keep a track on numbers, how people are progressing and make us feel  wanted.

As a trainee i dont think you are covered by the MSA as the do not recognise you, (I think I started the thread a while ago) however you are covered by the club you are there for. It is stupid they do not recognise trainees but thats the MSA all over

Last year, when I was still a Trainee, I asked someone why Trainee marshals weren't MSA registered until they had been graded as either Specialist or Course Marshal. In reply I was told that MSA numbers aren't allocated until they are sure that the marshal is making a commitment to marshal and they are doing this by grading to either Specialist or Course Marshal.
However, if you want to marshal at bike meetings you are immediately allocated a number by the ACU showing that you are a Novice (Trainee). Racesafe (BSB, WSB and MotoGP) also register you immediately again showing that you are a Novice.

Here's a suggestion. Why not write to the MSA explaining this point and asking them if they propose to change their system in order to accomodate trainee marshals who are keen not to disappear from the scene.

Go to the MSA website which I believe is www.msa.org and just scan through the contacts for the right chap to do with marshalling. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I have just spent the last 20 mins trawling through the MSA website and the only reference to marshalling is for rally marshals. I did maage to find the names of the Chairman and excutive members so I will start by writing to these.
I will keep you posted as to how I get on.

Should I have received a licence card as a trainee this season then? :confused:
All I got from Adrian was confirmation of the dates I was down for and a marshal's pass for Castle Combe. I didn't receive a licence card nor a grading card (something I'll be chasing up for next year, as I want to start getting some signatures).
Is there anything else I should have that I'll need to chase up next year?

Peter Todd is the name I see when we get our stuff re Le Mans, so I guess, if he isn't the boy, he knows who is... 
Good old MSA don't let on who cares about marshals. It may start a trend!

It's not really necessary. We, as trainees, got them last year because admission for marshals at Oulton Park is by MSA card - without the MSA card, the organising clubs would have to supply tickets.

Did you attend a training day? If so, you should have received a grading card if for no other reason than to record a training signature for the day you were attending!

Yep, I went to the training day, but Adrian said something about the cards not being available yet, and that was the last I heard of it.

If you keep a note of the training days you have attended it should be ok to have them added to your licence when it eventually arrives. Having said that, you need a training signature on your licence each year so the one in February should do the trick for you.

What happens to old threads? Do they just drop off the end or are they stored somewhere in case someone wants to refer back to them?
At the start of the season, which has just finished, there was a thread about Grading Cards/Signatures etc and perhaps it might be worth that one being resurrected.

Does anyone know if we are supposed to get a grading card and or licence if we attend Speed Event training? Do we have to attend a circuit training session to get our MSA licences so that we may actually gain entry to events at Oulton etc?
