Teams 3rd Drivers...who?
So why wasn't Sato there for BAR when they needed him?
Which of the teams do have their 3rd drivers standing by until Sat. night and who uses who...

I think that you can only change driver before Saturday morning practice. Button crashed during the Saturday morning session meaning that Sato would have been thrown straight into a 1 lap qualifying session...

Most of the teams do...
these are the ones I can remember:
McLaren - Wurz (I think De La Rosa is test driver)
Ferrari - Burti (? - or is it Badoer)
Renault - McNish
BAR - Sato *cough*- Ant Davidson is the test driver

Generally the rule is that you must decide before final qualifying, although in exceptional circumstances you can throw someone straight into the race - a bit difficult nowadays with no Warm-up. Sato wasn't used becuase he wasn't there....

I know Wurz, Gene and McNish turn up to all the GPs, we know Sato doesn't, what about Zonta and Massa?

Quote Asp:"Ferrari - Burti (? - or is it Badoer)"
Burti has left Ferrari at the end of last year, replaced by Massa. Massa is also third driver for Sauber Petronas, if in any unfortunate situation that Sauber find themselves requiring his services.
Massa turns up for races as well. In fact, he was at Malaysia and Brazil (according to Formula 1 Magazine) to learn from Rubens and Michael.
And didn't Burti replace Eddie in Jaguar at Austria 2000 at the last moment when Eddie pulled out of the race??

Its crazy not to have a standby driver. Richards and BAR dropped the ball on this one.
Then again, would you want Sato to go out in a heavy car that he hasn't driven, to qualify, in Monaco, with his record.....hmmm.
Well I would.

I don't geddit - Davidson was at almost all the GPs for BAR last year.
I reckon something political is going on. Perhaps JV feels (rightly) threatened by Sato being around and has got the team to keep him away. But then why not use Davidson since he and JV get along well? perhaps Honda wouldn't like it...
Hmm no wonder willis kept his gob shut - I reckon its quite complicated and sensitive.

It was indeed strange not letting Sato drive, as far as I know, all 3rd drivers are present on race weekends.

Maybe Richards didn't want Sato to race because he thought one wrecked car for the weekend was enough.
