Pug 406's back in the BTCC
It's reported in Motorsport news that the VLR Peugeot 406's will make a return to the BTCC, possibly as early as the penultimate race this year.
Clio team Griffin Motorsport have bought two cars and will be udertaking a full Independents Cup campaign in 2004, with team boss Julian Griffin driving one of them.
He aims to do a 'very reasonable deal' for an up and coming talent on the 2nd car and is open to approaches.

That's really good to see independent interest already for 2004. Don't think we'll see them this year but will they still be competitive next year?

Lee- Welcome to the forum!
I have a question for you. Which car in your BTCC career sounded the best?

I think they'll really struggle unless they somehow find a young superstar for the second car. The 406s ar quite outdated,a dn I'm sure the 307s will be quicker by next season. Plus there'll probably be several independantly ran ETCC-spec cars to face.

I don't think they'll do that well, but it'll be great to have more cars, especially as the 406 looks great, even if it isn't competative!

Not the Lexuses (Lexi?) again... where are they now? I know one of the 406s is being raced by Moen in the STCC but not having the best of luck at the moment. I just hope that if this plan comes to fruition the cars will be competitive. On the whole, lap times this year seem to be a bit slower than 2002 (I'm just looking at qualifying times from Thruxton and Croft) so maybe they'll have a chance?

Suspect the lap times being slower (if they are??) is down to the change to Dunlop rubber so this would not help the 406.

WOW, glad to see those cars still have owners lol
Looking forward to seeing them out on track...i just hope this isnt a Lexus idea where only 1 car will race then the team runs out of money etc.

I met Julian last season and think it's great that we are going to see another independent team next year, the 406's may not be the class of the field but Dan did win the indie championship in one. I wish Julian, Michelle and everyone at Team Griffin the best of luck, the 406's will look great with elephants on them!!

Potential PR disaster for VLR if those cars go out and beat the 307's. Doubt they will but it would be ironic. Good to see the grid boosted again and good to see that the Clio cup is working as a feeder series.

I am predicting that the 406's will be competitive in the Independants Cup. Why? well indie cup leader is Rob Collard, he is driving the same car that Barwell had last year, a car which the 406's beat to the independants cup. So with them aiming to be competitive in terms of the independants cup, I wouldn't write them off especially if they get a half decent second driver! I heard a possibility of Roger Moen even racing at Donington (when the cars are expected out) as part of the deal.

I don't read too mcuh into Rob Collard's car being ex-Barwell. Rob is a far better driver than Tom Childish or Aaron Slightly-too-many-wheels. And Dan and Carl are arguably better than Roger Moen, obviously the jury will be out on Julian Griffin himself.
JIM Griffin??? Who??
