Patrick Carpentier still confident he can turn his year around
MARC DELBES
MONTREAL (CP) - Patrick Carpentier isn't having the season he hoped for but the CART driver is still confident he can bounce back this year.
Carpentier of Joliette, Que., trails championship leader and Player's teammate Paul Tracy of Toronto by 73 points after 11 of 19 events. "The season is pretty different from what I thought it would be," Carpentier said at a news conference Tuesday to promote the Aug. 24 CART race in Montreal.

Doesn't sound like he is worrying about next year in this interview.

Well if he doesn't improve this year, he may have to worry about next year... Paul has really put Pat to shame.. and to be honest, I don't think Pat has ever really been a #1 driver... Greg Moore was miles ahead of him... Tags was ahead of him more often than not in his first year...then went away a bit, and now Paul is whooping his butt at Player's.

Isn't Paul pretty much whooping everybody's though? Not sure how much of a diff it makes, but isn't this Pat's 1st year in a Lola vs how long has Paul been driving one?

Patreek is still a decent driver, a "real character" and it would be a shame if nobody in CART gave him a ride. It would be both CART's and our loss if he left.

If Patrick Carpentier ends up in the IRL, or NASCAR, I'm going to have to start watching some all-oval racing.

Well, he was the team leader last year, and clearly he wasn't this year. He must have felt not that supported...
And yes, it'd be a shame to lose Patrick.

I'll go where Patrick goes. He's one of the main reasons why I follow this sport. I've been fortunate enough to get all-access, and I've had the opportunity to see/speak with all the drivers up close every year. Patrick Carpentier is the classiest, friendliest most consistently down-to-earth driver of all. I've never seen him turn down a request for photo or autograph. He's even taken the time to explain some of the complex intricacies involved in the sport from a driver's point of view. That kind of information is priceless to somebody like me. So if he goes to IRL, that's what I'll be watching religiously. CART will never be the same without him.

Most of the drivers are like that actually... the ones that aren't are the exception... as for absolute friendliest, have you met Darren Manning? He's extremely down to earth, and of the current crop, I'd say he spent the most time mingling with the fans in Toronto.
Since when did Pat become such a god? He's had a good ride for how many years and only managed 3 wins? Apart from a brief period last year he's been outshined by all of his teammate pretty consistently...
I don't want to lose him either, but I have to admit, as far as Cart drivers go, Pat is pretty mediocre.

Great post. I agree with all that you said there.
I would definetly follow where-ever Pat goes too. Which I hope is CART. He's one of the main reasons I go to the Vancouver Indy. $2,000 for the trip, and he's worth it. lol. Has always been pleasant to meet. Even when he's in a rush to get to drivers parade, he posed for a picture.
He may not be #1 in Players. But he's #1 to me. Just for his attitude. Paul has a bad attitude with fans. Well whenever I see him anyways. =\

That's true. I've met 14 of the current drivers. They've all been great guys to meet. I think Champ Car drivers seem to be the most pleasant people in the sports industry. Pat just stands out more for having a great sense of humour.
The only one I was dissapointed with, was Tracy.

Tracy, really? You must have gotten him at a bad time...they're super super busy during the weekends, especially in Canada, and it can get to them...trying to figure out the car and having every minute of your time taken by appearances, interviews, autograph sessions, speaches, etc etc... I've found Paul to be fairly quiet outside the car (surprise!), but friendly.

More then one bad time then. I met him last year, and I don't even think he looked up to me. In 2001 we called out to him during the parade, and he just sorta gave a "yah whatever wave" *shrugs* I've seen him lots of times with fans. Barely paying attention to them. I was just chatting with another person who went to Vancouver race, and she was really disappointed as well.
I can understand though. I don't think I would be able to handle so many fans following you every second. But the other drivers who also get quite a few fans are still nice enough, to atleast smile.
But oh well. What can ya do
It's all good.

Yeah, the Canadian races are unbelievably crazy for these guys, they literally don't have a moment to rest from sun up to sun down. I think it might be different a little better at some of the other races.

patrick can try- but he has always been very poor- A great set of machines and lots of luck but a crashmeister, and a lack luster racer really, I think He should try CASCAR and just go away...I am not a fan really of his drving. That being said He is one of my favorites at the driver parties and what have you...

Patreek (as you say) said today that he will not move in IRL since there is too many bad injuries over there. If the Champ Car series closes its doors, he said he will be looking for a ride in nascar Busch or Winston Cup
