daMatta has the mental edge on Panis?

http://www.planet-f1.com/Home/story_13625.shtml

Two strong drivers but largely overlooked in general. Who do you think is the better? Tough one!

obviously we didnt get too much on screen action of the 2 thru out the year... but judging on the way Da Matta has settled in and beaten his vastly experienced team mate pts. wise in only his first year suggests that Cristiano is mentally tougher!!

and of course he led the GP extreamly well under pressure circumstances!!

Silverstone was a superb effort from Da Matta, especially compared to the way Panis failed to hold the pace, quickly slid back, and faield to reap the points Toyota looked ot deserve that day. Olivier's an experienced, capable driver, and was eprcieved to be mentally strong, aided by various experiences from Canada 97 and Monaco 96, but maybe Cristiano has the edge there? He's certainly a driver who's heading for the top, and more evidence of what CART can produce, given that he was quite good at best in F300

The thing about Da Matta is that's he's always improving & i think by the end of next season Panis is going to be really struggling compared to his teammate.

I have no idea about Panis, but I don't think the mental game has ever been something Da Matta has had to worry about.

da Matta has far less experience than Panis yet its been close between them and often CDM has had the edge in the races. It wouldn't be a surprise if CDM dominated Panis next year.

Cristiano has the best attitude about where he is right now. He's just happy to be in F1! I like how he's so optimistic. It makes me want to see him succeed.

A drivers mental outlook is critical to his success. The "damn the torpedos" attitude which many young throttle-psychos possess usually changes after a major shunt. Michael Andretti even admitted as much after his Mid Ohio high-speed endo several years ago. Schu almost retired after Silverstone (nice comeback though !) Franchitti hasn't been the same since his. Each person has a different response, but the memory of hitting the armco at 180 doesn't soon fade.

Do you think Panis's accident is far from his mind as he tries to go flat through La Parabolica ? I don't know..but it would be on MINE.

Thus I think DaMattas young virgin mind is much less burdened with the baggage of "growing up" in the motor racing buisness. A definite advantage.

Panis is more of an "emotional" driver - meaning mentally less frozen - than Da matta, according to their boss.

Remember, Panis is an impressive driver and for CDM to come and match him in a season, really speaks alot about CDM's ability. And no doubt, his confidence is bouyed by this season's result.

And Panis is one of the most experienced driver on the grid, and i won't be sureprise if he's no longer at his peak performance and facing a deecline. Hence, CDM seems more likely the guy holding the upper hand now.

Da Matta is the better driver, and a possible barrichello of the future, although i hope he doesn't become a #2 driver.
Panis is experienced...but i dont think he'll have a drive in 2005!

Da Matta is the better driver, but I'm surprised that CDM didn't do better in qualifying. True he had to learn all of the tracks and he did pretty well in the races. Overall I don't know if I would go so far as to say CDM was faster than Panis.

I'm surprised that Panis was potrayed as an emotional driver. He always seemed to me to be rather calm and calculating; however that is from the outside looking in.
I think Panis is approaching his final year, unless he opts to drive for a lesser team, which I think is below his talents. daMatta is probably Toyota's short term future and is proving to be a good investment for them. With his limited raceday testing he has matched Panis pace, I wouldn't say better but he has been very competitve.
It's a shame about these new qualifying rules as it's really difficult to compare team-mates speed relative to each other now. Who's quicker? It's neck and neck IMO but daMatta has the support of his boss and that must be worth a few tenths.
