I/we drive a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 ls, 99T.
And for my work i have a clapped out Sierra estate, f reg 1.8 L, its a workhorse but it is dying slowly.
I quite fancy a Cavalier GSI2000, seen one on ebay, or a Peugeot 405 mi16, to replace the Sierra, unfortunatly both of those are not all that practicle, so it will probably be a van.

Ah, that's the Escort 'Mexico' that got cries of "SACRILEGE!" from the purists ain't it?
Seeing as this thread's popped up today - here's what I've just ordered for 1st March!

A quick up date. The Astra is giving me problems, there is a constant amount of creamy oil gunge in the rocker cover, right where the oil filler cap is, i had the engine flushed out and had new oil put in, three days later the gunge started to return, i have been assured by Vauxhall and an independant garage that this problem is nothing to worry about and is only down to condensation forming in the rocker cover, its a plastic rocker cover and that is to blame. I myself have looked at a few other 1.6 8v Vauxhall engines and it does seem to be a common problem but after 6 years of these engines having the plastic head surely Vauxhall would have sorted it out by now.
Anyway, the Sierra did indeed die, and has been scrapped, instead of the van i bought a 2.0ltr Renault Laguna, its a bit of a nail but does the job.

Daz - are you losing water at all in your coolant system?
It sounds typical head gasket trouble to me! Well it would if a Vauxhall techie hasn't said it's a common problem ??
Garcon - that looks quality to me!

I drive a Chevy SS 454 pick up. It's a tire smoker. I think that works out to 7.4 litres.

1988 Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible with only 33,000miles on the clock. 5.3 litre and very thirsty!
1955 Daimler Conquest Century. Great for going to the Goodwood revival meeting!
Every day drive is a Ford Focus TDi Ghia. Lot of them about but reliable, comfortable and economical

Nope, and it doesnt overheat at all, its just condensation in the Rocker cover, and only in one area of it right under the oil filler cap. Apparently the previous shape mk3,4,5 Fiesta's are also prone to it, and Montego's. At first i thought it was the head gasket, but it has never overheated and there is no gunk in the water at all, Vauxhall pressured up the system too, confirming it was not the head gasket. They were going to charge too much though for the engine flush and new oil, a whopping 120 quid. So i took it to a local garage who charged me 36 quid, then the gunk started to return after only 3 days, its now probably full up again, i give up looking at it. This 1.6 8v engine is not something i would recommend to anyone, infact everyone should avoid it like the plague, its truly useless.
